Reservoir Engineer is responsible for identifying oil and gas reserves and developing strategies to maximize recovery. Designs and tests new wells and monitors and predicts performance. An Aqueduct and Reservoir Keeper patrols and inspects a reservoir, a section of an aqueduct, or watershed to locate actual or potentially unsafe or unsanitary conditions; operates gates and valves as instructed to control the flow of water; monitors pressure, flow and various alarm systems; operates remote valves through electrical control panels; and maintains reservoir grounds.
It is expected that most appointments made from the eligible list resulting from this examination will be to positions that are located in the Owens Valley near Bishop, Independence, and Lone Pine, California and Antelope Valley near Mojave, California.

In accordance with Civil Service Rule 4.2, all applicants who apply may not be tested in this examination. To meet anticipated hiring needs, only a limited number of qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the selection process in the following order: 1) Los Angeles City promotional applicants who meet the minimum requirements. You must have received a regular appointment to a City position or be on a reserve list to apply for this examination as a promotional candidate; 2) Applicants currently employed by the City of Los Angeles on a part-time or exempt basis who meet the minimum requirements; 3) Remaining applicants who meet the minimum requirements in sufficient numbers to meet hiring needs based on a random sampling of those qualified candidates. Applicants not selected to be tested may re-apply in a subsequent filing period in order to be considered for that period’s selection process.

Multiple-Choice Test : 100%
The examination will consist entirely of a weighted multiple-choice test administered and proctored on-line. In the on-line multiple-choice test, the following competencies may be evaluated: Judgment and Decision Making; Written Communication; Mathematics, including: measurement and unit conversions, including the application of and relationship between hydraulic measurements and concepts; Safety Focus, including knowledge of: pertinent safety regulations and procedures as required by the California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) and the Department of Water and Power, including those related to the use and maintenance of tools and equipment, fall protection, the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and lockout/tagout procedures; emergency and non-emergency safety procedures, practices, and techniques used when performing work around aqueducts, reservoirs, dams, canals, and other City property; the content and purpose of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS); safety precautions required prior to entering confined spaces; traffic safety precautions necessary when performing work in streets; hazards and appropriate safety precautions relevant to working in hot, cold, and/or natural areas; Job Knowledge, including knowledge of: the operation, function, and nomenclature of equipment; methods, procedures, tools and materials used to make minor repairs to the aqueduct/reservoir system and department facilities; elementary hydraulics theory involving the flow and storage of water; procedures for reading and interpreting various instruments and measurement devices; prints used for piping systems, including standardized symbols; flow measurement structures; operating procedures for spreading grounds; the purpose and characteristics of a test hole, toe-of-dam, and French drain; and other necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.

The multiple-choice test will be proctored and administered on-line during a single session. Candidates invited to participate in the on-line multiple-choice test will be able to take the test from a remote location (i.e. their home) using a computer with a webcam and a reliable internet connection. Candidates will receive an e-mail from the City of Los Angeles outlining the dates and specific steps on how to take the multiple-choice test on-line. Candidates who do not complete and submit the multiple-choice test on-line using a computer by the specified date and time will not be considered further in this examination.
For candidates who apply between Friday, September 22, 2023 and Thursday, October 5, 2023, it is anticipated that the on-line multiple-test will be administered between Tuesday, November 28, 2023 and Monday, December 4, 2023.
For candidates who apply between Friday, April 12, 2024 and Thursday, April 25, 2024, it is anticipated that the on-line multiple-test will be administered between Tuesday, June 11, 2024 and Monday, June 17, 2024.
