Respiratory Therapy Director directs the programs and staff of the respiratory therapy department. Oversees the provision of diagnostic, treatment, and educational services for patients with respiratory disorders. Being a Respiratory Therapy Director develops and implements respiratory care services in accordance with the policies of the hospital and the directives of the medical staff. Monitors patient progress and treatment plans. Additionally, Respiratory Therapy Director manages departmental budgets and reports, and maintains department records and statistics. Requires an advanced degree. Typically reports to top management. Requires Registered Respiratory Therapist. The Respiratory Therapy Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.     Summary: Under intermittent supervision, organizes and directs the work of the Respiratory Therapy Department. Coordinates staff to provide effective respiratory services and maintain quality standards. Utilizes a multidisciplinary team approach to develop and maintain an environment that supports the professional RT and staff.

    Responsibilities: Financial Management:

    Assists with the development of the operational budget and monitorsexpenses and productivity.

    Demonstrates knowledge and accountability for fiscal aspects of department operations and advocates for resources to support department and division goals.Responsible for operating within approved budget.

    Manages and orders the Respiratory department’s material supplies required to provide respiratory care services.

    Operationalizes the Shared Governance model of NursingPractice and integrates point of care staff into decision- making.

    Human Resource Management:

    Provides adequatestaffing for the department to ensure safe and effective provision of care delivery. Recognizes the diverse skill levels of individual staff members and the unique needs of the patient population when developing staffing plan and ensures level of staffing for the level of acuity is appropriate 24 hours/day.

    Develops and implements effectiveeducational programs designedto assist the staff in the progression from novice to expert in the care of the patient and family.

    Evaluates staff competency by direct observation, peer review, orientation and employee input and documents this in the appropriate system. Completes performance evaluations in a timely manner.

    Contributes to nursing management and Respiratory Therapy education and professional development of staff, students,and colleagues in an environment of mutual respect and understanding.

    Responsible for interviewing and hiring.

    Participates in corrective disciplinary action decisions. Assistswith retention and recruitment of staff.

    Monitors and evaluates appropriate utilization of staffin collaboration with hospital wide stakeholders.

    Performance Improvement and Quality Outcomes:

    Systematically evaluates the quality and effectiveness of respiratory practices and services, analyzing appropriate internal and externaldata and information to identify opportunities for improving services and patient outcomes.

    Ensures quality of care to patients and families.

    Promotes satisfaction of internal and external customers.

    Develops, maintains, and evaluates patient/client and staffing data collection systemsand processes to support the practice of Respiratory Therapists and the delivery of patient care.

    Participates in the qualityimprovement activities by providing respiratory care representation on several hospital wide committees and Clinical Core Business Groups.

    Promotes and monitors regulatory agency standards and customer serviceexpectations for the practice of all aspects of respiratory therapy.

    Occasionally functions as staff respiratory therapist when required.

    Performs other dutiesas assigned.

    ABachelor’s degree in Respiratory Therapy.Progressively responsible professional work experience, education, or training may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for college education.

    MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION

    Non-supervisory - Five (5) years of multi-faceted respiratory therapy experience.

    AND

    Supervisory - Two (2) years involving employee supervision.

    MINIMUM CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION

    Certification as a Registered Respiratory Therapist.

    Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)

    Current AdvancedCardiac Life Support (ACLS)
