Respiratory Therapy Director directs the programs and staff of the respiratory therapy department. Oversees the provision of diagnostic, treatment, and educational services for patients with respiratory disorders. Being a Respiratory Therapy Director develops and implements respiratory care services in accordance with the policies of the hospital and the directives of the medical staff. Monitors patient progress and treatment plans. Additionally, Respiratory Therapy Director manages departmental budgets and reports, and maintains department records and statistics. Requires an advanced degree. Typically reports to top management. Requires Registered Respiratory Therapist.     Position Overview:

    Under minimal supervision, oversees respiratory therapy practice and staff to ensure diagnostic cardiopulmonary evaluation and respiratory therapy treatment to patients with deficiencies and abnormalities of the cardiopulmonary system to include related education and guidance for the patient and family.

    Essential Functions:

    • Leads the respiratory therapy team to ensure application of sound RT practices and staffing to meet census and acuity needs.
    • Oversees documentation of RT practice in accordance with compliance-related mandates and in support of resident needs.
    • Partners with nursing, rehab, and other related departments to achieve cohesive and comprehensive care for each resident.
    • Completes discharge planning by consulting with physicians, nurses, social workers, and other health care workers; contributes to patient care conferences.
    • Assures continuation of therapeutic plan following discharge by designing home exercise programs; instructing patients, families, and caregivers in home exercise programs; recommending and/or providing assistive equipment; recommending outpatient or home health follow-up programs.
    • Educates residents, family members and/or caregivers in care processes for post-discharge; works with social services to ensure appropriate resources and/or Durable Medical Equipment (DME) available as needed.
    • Ensures operation of equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements following
    • manufacturer's instructions, troubleshooting malfunctions and arranging for repairs.
    • Develops respiratory therapy staff by providing information and developing and conducting in-service training programs.
    • As a practitioner, utilizes the application of scientific principles for the identification, prevention,
    • remediation, research, and rehabilitation of acute or chronic cardiopulmonary disfunction in order to achieve optimum health and function.
    • Reviews data, collects additional data, and makes recommendations to evaluate the respiratory status of residents, develops respiratory care plan, and determines the appropriateness of prescribed therapy.
    • Complies with federal, state, and local legal and certification requirements by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating future legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; advising management on needed actions.
    • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    • Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language and have strong communication and critical thinking skills.
    • Must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age-related needs of the residents served.
    • Must be a supportive team leader and member, contribute to and be an example of teamwork and team concept.
    • Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
    • Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel, and the general public.
    • Must be knowledgeable of medical practices and procedures, as well as laws, regulations, and guidelines that pertain to long-term care.
    • Must possess the willingness to work harmoniously with other personnel.
    • Must possess the ability to plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret the programs, goals, objectives, policies, and procedures, etc., that are necessary for providing quality care.
    • Must have patience, tact, a cheerful disposition, and enthusiasm, as well as the willingness to handle difficult residents.
    • Must be willing to seek out new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them into existing nursing practices.

    Education and Experience:

    • High School diploma or equivalent.
    • Minimum of associate degree in respiratory therapy.
    • RT or CRT certification.
    • Possesses and maintains current and unencumbered respiratory care practitioner certification/license in state of practice.
    • Minimum of two years’ experience as an RT.
    • Experience as a lead, supervisor, or manager of Respiratory Therapy is strongly preferred.
