    WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:
    This position will perform semi-skilled work, frequently in remote field locations, to ensure that mobile facilities and transportation equipment are operational. You will have the opportunity to assist Wildlife Troopers in accomplishing departmental objectives through unique and interesting conditions by way of stakeouts, assisting in patrols on marine vessels, aircraft, vehicles, off-road vehicles, and performing maintenance on buildings, vessels, etc.

    THE WORKING CONDITIONS YOU CAN EXPECT:
    The Department of Public Safety, Division of Alaska Wildlife Troopers, is recruiting for two Public Safety Technician I positions in King Salmon. You will have the opportunity to work in varying outdoor environmental conditions as well as some time spent in an office setting. State bunkhouse room for the employee only is provided for the position.
     
    WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR:
    To succeed in this position, the incumbent will demonstrate the following:
    • Ability to set up camp independently in a wilderness situation.
    • Experience using hazardous equipment, such as firearms, chain saws, etc.
    • Experience operating boats more than 24 feet in length.
    • Ability to perform general building maintenance, to include plumbing, electrical and carpentry repairs.
    • Ability to spend long periods of time in close quarters while at sea on vessels between 29-156 feet in length.

    Eighteen years of age and possess a high school diploma or GED at the time of employment.
     
    Special Note:
    Must have a current, valid Alaska Driver's License at time of employment.
     
    Job duties require lifting and carrying of loads weighing up to 70 pounds over rough or uneven surfaces. As a condition of employment, the Department of Public Safety will require a physical examination to determine the ability to meet the physical demands of the job.
     
    A background investigation, including a criminal record check for conviction of felony or misdemeanor crimes, will be made.
     
    Most positions are seasonal and may require work in remote sites where employees may quarter in bunkhouses, vessels, or tents.
     
    Employees must be available for recall to testify in court during the off season; if this occurs they will be compensated.

    MEDICAL EXAM

    The successful applicant will need to provide a current medical exam showing fitness to perform the essential duties of this position at their own expense.


    FIREARMS
    This position requires the use or possession of a firearm or ammunition. In accordance with the federal Omnibus Consolidated Appropriations Act of 1997 (PL 104-208), if you have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence, you may not hold this position.

    A "misdemeanor crime of domestic violence" is an offense that is (1) a misdemeanor under Federal or state law; and (2) has, as an element, the use or attempted use of physical force, or the threatened use of a deadly weapon, committed by a current or former spouse, parent, or guardian of the victim, by a person with whom the victim shares a child in common, by a person who is cohabiting with or has cohabited with the victim as a spouse, parent, or guardian, or by a person similarly situated to a spouse, parent, or guardian of the victim.

    If you have ever been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence, do NOT apply for this position.


    APSIN
    Please be aware – this position requires the use of the Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN). A security clearance issued by the Department of Public Safety (DPS) is necessary to use APSIN. DPS will deny security clearance for any applicant who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor in this state or another jurisdiction, or who may be a fugitive from justice. Additionally, security clearance will be withdrawn if DPS discovers that material information was falsified or omitted at the time of the initial application for security clearance.
     
    BACKGROUND CHECK

    This position requires the incumbent to submit to a fingerprint based criminal history background check.  Due to the sensitive nature of this position, and required access to APSIN, an applicant with criminal convictions will not move forward in the selection process.
