    DEFINITION:

    The Assistant Principal supports the School Principal in the instructional leadership and administration of the

    school; guides, directs, and is responsible for the operation of the school in assigned areas; in the absence of

    the Principal, the Assistant Principal shall be in charge of the school; and to perform other duties as required.

    DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: The following is a list of duties that is representative of the position

    that includes, but is not limited to:

    ▪ Assists the Principal in providing leadership to the staff in pursuit of goals and objectives for the school.

    ▪ Participate in development and evaluation of educational programs.

    ▪ Encourage and support development of innovative instructional programs, helping teachers pilot such

    efforts when appropriate.

    ▪ Promote the use of technology in teaching/learning process.

    ▪ Ensure that school rules are uniformly observed and that student discipline is appropriate and equitable.

    ▪ Assists the Principal through the appropriate implementation of the student guidance and discipline

    system of the school:

    o Execute disciplinary procedures on students referred from classrooms;

    o Communication with parents regarding discipline matters.

    o Help to develop and implement a student discipline management system that results in

    positive student behavior.

    ▪ Assists the Principal in overseeing the safety and protection of all school personnel and students.

    ▪ Assist the Principal in areas relating to student activities (i.e. school assemblies and Red Ribbon Week)

    including supervising extracurricular activities, including league sporting events, concerts, dances,

    parties, field trips, and other activities beyond the regular school day as assigned.

    ▪ Assist the Principal in certain designated areas relating to supervision of instruction and improvement in

    curriculum as assigned by the Principal. Promote a positive, caring climate for learning.

    ▪ Ensure that students are adequately supervised during non-instructional periods.

    ▪ Conduct conferences on student and school issues with parents, students, and teachers.

    ▪ Coordinates the testing program (benchmarks and STAR) at sites.

    ▪ Share supervisory responsibility for certificated and classified staff with the school principal as assigned.

    ▪ Manage the distribution and inventory of all curriculum materials throughout the school year including

    ensuring all classroom curricular materials are distributed prior to the first day of school.

    ▪ Assist with the development of a master schedule of classes and student assignment to the classes.

    ▪ Supports a program of parent involvement as a means of interpreting and furthering the school’s

    program; participates in community and district-wide activities as assigned.

    ▪ Articulate the school’s mission to the community and solicit its support in realizing its mission.

    ▪ Demonstrate awareness of school-community needs and initiate activities to meet those needs.

    ▪ Use appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and parent involvement.

    ▪ Maintain visibility and accessibility on the school campus and at school related activities and events.

    ▪ Attend and participate in meetings and serve on committees as assigned.

    ▪ Comply with federal and state laws, State Board of Education rule, and board policy.

    PHYSICAL AND MENTAL CHARACTERISTICS:

    or home site-to-site), drive a vehicle, and respond to emergency situations; physical strength sufficient to

    lift a student weighing 45 pounds and more with a two-person lift; physical stamina sufficient to stand or

    walk throughout student recess periods; physical, mental and emotional tolerance to be exposed to noise

    generated by students in an enclosed environment; physical tolerance to be exposed to dust pollen specific

    agents/ chemicals, cleansers, and foul smells; mental acuity to collect and interpret data, evaluate, reason,

    define problems, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, make valid judgements and decisions.

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education and Experience:

    ● Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in

    education or related field

    ● Minimum (5) years successful teaching or school counseling, and leadership experience (elementary or

    middle school preferred)

    Knowledge of:

    ● Continuous improvement methodologies, including inquiry cycles

    ● Planning, organization, coordination, and implementation of professional learning

    ● Curriculum design, development, implementation, and data-driven instruction

    ● Practices and principles of adult learning, consulting, and presenting

    ● National and state education initiatives including the Common Core State Standards, Multi-Tiered

    Systems of Support, and Local Control Accountability Plan development

    ● State and federal guidelines and requirements concerning accountability and instructional programs

    ● Systems thinking and improvement science

    ● Qualitative and quantitative data sources to support school improvement

    ● Applicable laws, codes, regulations, policies, and procedures

    ● Development of written reports

    ● Current administrative operation of California Public Schools
