    The Illinois Natural History Survey (INHS) investigates and documents the biological resources of Illinois and other areas and acquires and provides natural history information that can be used to promote the common understanding, conservation, and management of these resources. INHS is part of the Prairie Research Institute (PRI) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, which is centrally located between Chicago, St. Louis, and Indianapolis.     The Illinois Natural History Survey is seeking a Mammalogist to conduct studies on biodiversity as well as in-depth monitoring of population and communities with an emphasis on bats. This position will be based in Champaign, Illinois.

    Duties & Responsibilities

    • Lead scientific field research including survey design and implementation.
    • Conduct sampling of mammal species, with an emphasis on bats, utilizing standard techniques, and record habitat and environmental data.
    • Conduct habitat suitability assessments for mammalian species (e.g., roost trees and hibernacula for bats).
    • Provide outreach and service to the public, the Survey, PRI, University of Illinois, and other professional organizations.
    • Participate in outreach activities to benefit the mission and visibility of the Survey, Prairie Research Institute, and University of Illinois.
    • Represent the Survey, PRI, and University of Illinois on committees.
    • Coordinate and cooperate with Survey, PRI, University of Illinois, and other groups.
    • Ensure field safety training is provided and protocols are followed by all team members.
    • Manage, analyze, and translate research and monitoring data into scientific findings and provide management recommendations to funding agencies, collaborators, and interested parties.
    • Translate scientific data into reports, peer-reviewed publication, and presentations to be delivered at conference and professional meetings.
    • Perform other duties to further the mission and goals of the Survey, PRI, and the University of Illinois.
    • Keep abreast of developments in this discipline.


    Additional Physical Demands

    Will require working in adverse field conditions (heat, humidity, biting insects, etc.), travel throughout the state of Illinois working irregular hours and overnights. Must be able to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 20 pounds over uneven terrain. Overnight travel may be necessary to fulfill the responsibilities of this position.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Bachelor’s degree in ecology, zoology, natural resources, or related field. Alternate degree fields will be considered depending on the nature and depth of the experience as it relates to this position. A minimum of 1 year of experience completing acoustic surveys and mist netting. Experience with remote data stations and cellular modems. Experience with processing bat acoustic data and uploading to North American Bat Monitoring Program portal. Valid Driver’s License.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Experience with SonoBat and Kaleidoscope software. Experience with statistical software packages such as R, SAS, SPSS, SYSTAT. Experience with museum/collection protocols. Experience with genetic sample collection.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    Ability to identify mammalian species of the Midwest, particularly of Illinois with an emphasis on bats. Strong interest in ecological research. Ability to work in a team and in an independent setting. Ability to supervise field technicians. Effective communication, personal relations, collaboration, organizational, teamwork, and leadership skills. Demonstrated ability to perform effectively in a diverse and fast-paced work environment consisting of multiple and changing priorities with stringent deadlines, under minimal supervision. Attention to detail, sound judgment, and strong conflict resolution skills. Proficiency in commonly employed software and databases.

    Appointment Information

    This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is on or around May 1, 2023 and the starting salary is $48,000.
