Lab Technician (Chemistry biotech)

  • Job Purpose: This is a part-time position with flexible hours. The duties primarily include performing laboratory-based tasks for multiple projects, specifically: designing chemical analysis experiments; conducting sample preparation for LC/MS and GC/MS analyses and assisting in other experimental work. The hire is also responsible for assisting in the day-to-day instrumentation maintenance. The hire is further expected to occasionally participate in interactive research meetings with other team members; present work notes; meet regularly with lab supervisor(s) and provide written summaries as needed; comply with laboratory safety practices/guidelines.

    Job Description:

    This open position is primarily to assist with performing laboratory-based tasks of varying complexity for various projects. This work requires thorough command of laboratory skill such as pipetting, weighing, using of common laboratory equipment (centrifuge, sonicator, vacuum line etc.) and at least some familiarity with the mass spectrometry (MS) method and MS instrumentation. The technician will perform laboratory work and assist in experimental work performed by laboratory members, assist in results analysis and data interpretation, as well as assist in instrument performance check and maintenance. Candidate is expected to participate in interactive research meetings with other team members, meet with laboratory supervisor(s) on a regular basis, provide written summaries of their work as needed. Good laboratory practices and record keeping is imperative. Finally, the incumbent will occasionally work with team members to prepare manuscript(s) on the project results.

    Effort distribution between these activities will be approximately:

    • Laboratory-based work (80%)
    • Note keeping (10%)
    • Interaction with researchers in the group (10%)

    Qualifications:

    Solid knowledge of chemistry, biochemistry, biology; familiarity with mass spectrometry and chromatography methods.

    Excellent laboratory skills including, but not limited to: pipetting, weighing, using of common laboratory equipment (centrifuge, sonicator, vacuum line etc.).

    Excellent communication skills.

    Thorough attention to details and ability to perform complex tasks.

    Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to contribute new concept generation for cutting- edge research and describe chemical and biological phenomena.

    Experience working and chemistry laboratory.

    Notebook and recordkeeping skills.

    Job Type: Part-time

    Pay: From $25.00 per hour

    Expected hours: 10 – 35 per week
