Position overview
Position title: Colquitt Lab Research Scientist (Junior Spec- Asst Spec)
Salary range: Starting at $49,000 - 56,600 annually, commensurate with qualifications and experience (see page 33 of the current UCSC salary scale for the
Fiscal Year Specialist title series).
Percent time: Full-time (100%)
Anticipated start: As soon as possible after initial review of the applications.
Position duration: Initial appointment will be for one year with the possibility of reappointment . Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.

Position Description
The Department of Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a research scientist. Under the direction of Assistant Professor Bradley Colquitt, the research scientist will play a central role in a research group studying the development and evolution of behavior using songbirds as a model system. Responsibilities will center around participating in a number of research projects, setting up the Colquitt laboratory, purchasing supplies, monitoring inventories, and establishing experiment protocols in molecular biology and histology. Duties will also include initially setting up and maintaining the labs bird colony and working with graduate and undergraduate researchers in continuing care. The position will require the individual to demonstrate excellent time management, attention to detail, and record keeping skills. In addition to performing tasks in a clean and organized manner; and to successfully work as a member of a diverse, interdisciplinary research team.
Applicants with expertise in general molecular biology (e.g. PCR, gel electrophoresis, molecular cloning), histology (in situ hybridization, immunofluorescence), or microscopy, and experience working with vertebrate laboratory models are strongly encouraged to apply.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
- For appointment to the junior specialist rank: Baccalaureate. degree (or equivalent foreign degree) in neuroscience, biology, biochemistry, cell biology, biomedical engineering, or a related field.
- For appointment to the assistant specialist rank: Masters degree or a baccalaureate degree and a minimum of two years of post-baccalaureate experience using molecular biology in a research or clinical laboratory. Equivalent foreign degrees are applicable. The degree must be in neuroscience, biology, biochemistry, cell biology, biomedical engineering, or a related field.
