Security Specialist administers, coordinates, and evaluates security programs that support the strategy, policies, and standards established for the physical safety of all visitors, employees, or customers to the organization's facilities and the security of property and assets. Compiles data and analyzes results of audits, inspections, daily logs, and incident reports to assess security vulnerabilities, measure program effectiveness, and identify the need for additional resources. Being a Security Specialist coordinates any required security clearance processing or investigative research for employees or job candidates with applicable entities. Assists with the development of training, education programs, and communications on security policies and topics to ensure staff is prepared for potential security issues, crisis response, disaster recovery, evacuation, workplace violence, and other emergency events. Additionally, Security Specialist monitors communications and stays informed about local, state, provincial, or federal security-related information, directives, and events. May coordinate or assist with investigations and critical event responses in coordination with law enforcement and other officials. Understands law enforcement methods, tactics, and procedures. Typically requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent. Typically reports to a head of a unit/department. The Security Specialist occasionally directed in several aspects of the work.   • Security Specialists/Unarmed Security Guards in the West Valley (2nd & 3rd shifts) are responsible for the safety and security of client properties; which includes, physical properties, employees, and guests. The general duties typically are guarding, patrolling, and monitoring of premises to prevent theft, violence, and rule infractions. A Security Specialist is a trained unarmed security guard that meets all requirements as prescribed by the Arizona Department of Public Safety. Must possess an Arizona guard card or complete training at our Canyon Security Specialist and Consulting training site to fulfill requirements as prescribed by Arizona Department of Public Safety to be issued an Unarmed Security Guard Card. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of this process.

    GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

    • ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Include, but are not limited to, the following:

    Conducts regular and timely patrols of building, grounds and adjacent areas of responsibility, ensures compliance with the rules and regulations. Patrols are accomplished by foot, car, golf cart, bicycle and/or Segway to ensure buildings and property are secure, presence to deter potential criminal activity, and or rule violations.

    Individually responsible for the post or assignment during work hours includes the following:

    • Prevention and suppression of crime
    • Protection of life and property
    • Identifying of offenders
    • Preservation of the peace and maintenance of order
    • Assistance with the development and improvement of mechanisms to create and enhance relationships with the client and the surrounding Community of stakeholders
    • May Participate and assists in disaster planning and drills Renders aid when necessary including first aid, CPR, defibrillation, etc.-Admits authorized persons to buildings and monitors controlled access areas.-Investigates all security related incidents; documents disturbances and incidents, takes charge which may require the use of physical restraints to maintain order, safety and to protect property, employees or guests.-Provides escorts as requested. Cooperates with staff and external law enforcement agencies while conducting inquiries. Testifies in court as needed.
    • May require monitoring and authorizing entrance and departure of employees, visitors, and other persons to guard against theft and maintain security of premises
    • Writes reports of daily activities and irregularities, such as equipment or property damage, theft, presence of unauthorized persons, or unusual occurrences
    • Calls police or fire departments in cases of emergency, such as fire or presence of unauthorized persons
    • Answers alarms and investigates disturbances
    • Circulates among visitors, patrons, or employees to preserve order and protect property
    • Patrols premises to prevent and detect signs of intrusion and ensure security of doors, windows, and gates
    • Escorts or drives motor vehicle to transport individuals to specified locations or to provide personal protection
    • Warns persons of rule infractions or violations, and apprehends or evicts violators from premises, using force when necessary

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Education: High school diploma or equivalent
    • Experience: 1-2 years of related experience preferred but not required
    • Licenses/Certifications: Security guard license from Arizona or have the ability to obtain through Canyon Security and Consulting prior to employment
    • May not have been previously denied, revoked or had certification(s) suspended
    • Willingness to maintain certifications that are current as required by licensing authorities
    • Must successfully complete background, and drug screening evaluations successfully prior to employment and maintained during employment as required by law
    • Demonstrates a high degree of ethical behavior and adheres to the standards and regulations of individual clients needs
    • Knowledge of criminal behavior and causes, underlying criminality and social psychological and physical needs of criminals helpful
    • Knowledge of and or ability to accurately interpret applicable federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations
    • Dedicated and committed to assisting others with ability to get along with diverse personalities and populations

    • Must be able to meet the physical requirements of the position and daily responsibilities
    • Must have physical stamina to chase on foot, apprehend, subdue and restrain if totality of circumstances dictate to maintain order within the guidelines of Arizona Revised Statutes
    • Good communications and interpersonal skills; ability to speak Spanish or other non-English language helpful
    • Demonstrates good judgement
    • Excellent conflict resolution/mediation skills
    • Must be able to work evenings and/or weekends depending on scheduled events
    • Certifications in CPR, First Aid and/or First Responder preferred but not required
    • Valid driver’s license and good driving record; must be insurable
    • Must be able to successfully complete required training throughout employment as required by Arizona State Law

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ENVIRONMENT

    • Work involves constant walking and standing
    • Frequent contact with employees, guests, external investigative personnel, first responders and/or members of the surrounding communities
    • Physical exertion may be required occasionally to climb stairs and over walls, run, jog, bend, twist, and may rarely crawl through tight spaces, kneel in confined areas
    • Occasional risk includes physical hazards from violent, aggressive and hostile people, a variety of weapons, bodily fluids, sharp objects, traffic, drugs and drug paraphernalia and civil litigation due to performance of duties; creating situations which can result in high anxiety and stress
    • Occasional lifting, carrying or moving substantial weight which may include human bodies of 165-180 pounds
    • Frequently reaches with arms above shoulders, upward, outward and sideways
    • Frequently uses hearing and participates in active listening over phones, communication devices, with employees, staff, guests, external investigative staff, first responders, the public and members of the community
    • Work frequently involves the exposure to weaponry including firearms and Taser devices
    • Constantly communicates verbally and in writing/electronically to generate/compose communications or to respond to questions, general inquiries, complaints and to deal with external customers/suppliers
    • May grab, grasp, hold, feel, push, pull with hands and wrist, using back and/or legs
    • Work may involve exposure to weapons which are carried on the person
    • May operate motorized vehicles, golf carts, bicycles and other available transportation
    • Constantly uses vision for trained observation, to focus near and far, track in order to identify individuals, recognize potential dangerous, unsafe or hazardous situations; recognize and mark surroundings, colors, buildings, clothing, vehicles, etc.; recognize out of the ordinary events and situations; prepare paperwork; operate vehicles; follow individuals; use electronic devices; review information such as identification cards and other similar situations which arise while on duty
    • Frequently exposure to seasonal extreme desert heat

    EMPLOYMENT

    • Must pass pre-employment background (Required)
    • Security Guard Card - candidates without the card must successfully complete Security Guard Card training and requirements prior to employment
    • Must pass pre-employment, additional screening required by Arizona Department of Public Safety for issuance of Security Guard Card
    • Compensation: $17.10 - $18.10 per hour to start
