    Job Description




    The function of the Senior Fisheries Technician (Research Vessel Captain) is to serve as one captain of a two-captain team to operate research vessels conducting survey and assessment projects on the Great Lakes. Vessel Captains share the responsibility for decisions regarding crew and vessel safety during operations on the Great Lakes and other waters of the State. Vessel captains serve as senior crew members on vessels performing technician duties when not actively captaining the vessel. They perform duties such as collecting fisheries and limnological data, maintaining data and samples collected, processing samples such as fish stomachs and ageing structures, entering data and performing quality control, and summarization activities. Vessel Captains perform more complex duties such as coordinating maintenance and repair of the vessel, research station facilities, and related equipment to ensure safe operation. A senior level technician vessel captain understands and implements current Great Lakes navigation and safety rules. Additionally, they interpret weather and sea conditions using a variety of technologies and knowledge to ensure safe vessel operation. This position will work on other survey projects, operate small boats, and perform sample and data processing, and data entry when not occupied with research vessel related responsibilities.



    Must possess a license issued by the U.S. Coast Guard to operate a vessel of at least 25 tons upon the Great Lakes and/or inland waters. US Coast Guard Captain's license up to 100 tons must be obtained after employment.

    Must possess or be able to obtain within six months of hire a class B Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement and without air brake restriction . Acquiring and maintaining a valid CDL is a condition of employment.

    Must possess a valid driver’s license.

    Required Education and Experience

    Education
    Possession of an associate's degree in science with course work emphasis in limnology, icthyology, aquatic systems, or field biology.
    Experience
    Three years of experience performing technical fisheries management activities equivalent to a Fisheries Technician, including one year equivalent to a Fisheries Technician E10.

    Alternate Education and Experience

    Fisheries Technician E10
    Possession of a bachelor's degree or higher with 16 semester (24 term) credits in job specific or related course work may be substituted for the education and experience requirements.

    Vacation and Sick Leave: Eligible full-time employees receive between 15 and 35 personal days and 13 sick days per year that may be rolled over to the following year if not used. Eligible employees also receive an additional day each year for community service or school functions.

    Paid Parental Leave: Eligible employees can take 12 weeks of paid leave immediately after a birth or adoption to allow needed time together at home with a new child.

    Paid Holidays: Eligible employees receive 13 or 14 paid holidays each year including New Year’s Eve and Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, Election Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, Thanksgiving Friday, Christmas Eve and Day.
