Sheetmetal Mechanic sets up and operates machines such as drill presses, punch presses, saws, shears, bending rolls, brakes, grinders, and numerical control equipment to shape and alter sheetmetal according to specifications. Follows blueprints, rough sketches, or engineer drawings to shape metal accurately. Being a Sheetmetal Mechanic uses hand and power tools to shape, cut, and smooth metal and to blend seams. May set up and operate soldering and welding equipment. Additionally, Sheetmetal Mechanic typically requires a high school diploma. Typically requires a Sheetmetal Apprenticeship. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Sheetmetal Mechanic works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area. How you’ll contribute to the team:
As a Sheetmetal Journeyman at Howe, you will work on commercial installation projects by installing sheet metal ducts, spiral ducts, roof top units, and other HVAC equipment. Our Sheet Metal Journeyman will direct the work of apprentices and aid them in fabricating, assembling, and installing products, materials, and equipment according to plans and project specifications. Installation of products may include setting RTUs, curbs, split system, kitchen hoods, TDC, S&D, black iron, and stainless duct. Our Sheet Metal Journeymen work closely with the Division Manager, Project Managers, and Field Superintendents to ensure that work is being installed according to schedule while maintaining Howe’s high-quality standards. You may also set up and operate fabrication machines, tools, and equipment as necessary and repair and maintain sheet metal products.
What you’ll bring to the table:
Sheetmetal Journeyman are proficient at following direction and possess great communication skills. You will be able to adapt quickly to change and work well with other contractors on the job site. A professional appearance is always expected at Howe. You will also need to possess a valid driver’s license to commute to and from job sites as needed and have flexibility in your schedule to work some weekends and overtime as needed.
How you’ll qualify:
The ideal Sheetmetal Journeyman will have at least 4 years of HVAC sheet metal experience and will demonstrate strong skills and knowledge of the trade. You’ll stand out by having any additional training or related education. Sheet Metal Journeyman are expected to obtain additional training and education as required. A high school diploma or equivalent is the minimum educational requirement.
What to expect in the field:
Working in the HVAC sheet metal industry can be physically demanding. As a Sheetmetal Journeyman, you must have the physical strength to lift/carry/push/pull up to 50lbs, and have the balance, hand-eye coordination, and stamina necessary to complete jobs in various areas. Journeymen must also be able to work at height, on ladders or lifts, and in all weather conditions for prolonged periods of time.
