ABOUT THE ROLE
As the Global Director of Engineering at OutCode Software, you’ll be responsible for the overall management and success of our worldwide engineering organization. Your strategic leadership will drive engineering activities across various products, disciplines, and geographies.
This critical role demands extensive engineering management expertise, strategic acumen, and exceptional leadership capabilities. You will set a visionary course for our engineering organization, ensuring alignment with company goals and fostering a culture defined by excellence, innovation, and collaborative spirit.
Serving as our senior technical authority, you will be held accountable for the engineering budget, resource planning, technology strategy, process enhancement, and talent development, among other key responsibilities. Your adeptness at constructing an effective organizational framework will involve overseeing engineering directors/VPs, ultimately ensuring the timely delivery of high-quality products.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- The Primary Engineer: A successful candidate will be willing to jump in with the team and help solve critical, complex issues. They should be willing to lead via servant leadership and keep their engineering skills as sharp as is reasonable. Full accountability for all Engineering projects and services will ultimately land with the Global Director of Engineering.
- Develop and Execute Engineering Vision and Strategy: The Global Director of Engineering is responsible for developing and executing the engineering vision and strategy in alignment with company goals. They drive the overall direction of the engineering organization and ensure that it aligns with the company's long-term objectives. This includes defining engineering priorities, resource allocation, and strategic initiatives to meet business requirements.
- Attract, Develop, and Retain World-Class Engineering Talent: One of the key responsibilities of the Global Director is to attract, develop, and retain top engineering talent from diverse backgrounds. They work on planning succession strategies, identifying skill gaps, and implementing talent development programs to nurture the growth of their teams. Building a strong and inclusive engineering culture that encourages innovation, creativity, and continuous learning is crucial.
- Define Engineering Processes, Policies, and Standards: The Global Director, in collaboration with Principle Engineers (see: Engineering Track - L5) establishes and maintains engineering processes, policies, and standards to ensure consistency, quality, and efficiency across all engineering activities. They continually identify opportunities for process improvement, streamlining workflows, and optimizing engineering operations.
- Maintain High Standards for Quality, Security, and Performance: As the Global Director of Engineering, they are responsible for maintaining high standards for product quality, security, reliability, performance, and sustainability. Ensuring that engineering outputs meet or exceed customer expectations and industry standards is a key focus area. This involves working with Principle Engineers to create documentation, re-usable boilerplate, and other tools to ensure consistency and quality.
- Advocate for Engineering Needs and Investments: In this role, the Global Director acts as a strong advocate for engineering needs and investments at the executive level. They collaborate with executive leadership to align engineering initiatives with business objectives and secure the necessary resources for successful project execution.
- Cultivate a Culture of Innovation and Operational Excellence: Fostering a culture of innovation, operational excellence, and shared accountability is a significant part of the Global Director's role. Encouraging a culture that embraces new technologies, processes, and methodologies drives continuous improvement and leads to innovative solutions. This should be done in collaboration with the L5 equivalents of other tracks (i.e. Engineering, Architecture, DevOps, IT).
- Develop Cross-Department Relationships: Building and maintaining trusted relationships with senior leaders and decision-makers across the organization is crucial. This enables effective cross-functional collaboration, resource sharing, and knowledge exchange.
- Represent Engineering at the Executive Level: The Global Director represents the engineering organization at the executive level, board meetings, and other external-facing capacities. Their ability to communicate complex technical concepts in a clear and concise manner is essential in these interactions.
SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
- 10 years engineering management experience with at least 5 years at Director/VP level. Extensive engineering leadership experience with a track record of managing large, complex teams and initiatives
- Ability to create and communicate a compelling vision and strategy for engineering. Outstanding communication and with a proven track record of managing large scale teams.
- Deep knowledge of budgeting, resource planning, organizational design and performance management. Strong business acumen with understanding of how engineering impacts business goals.
- Excellence in attracting, developing and retaining diverse world-class talent. Understanding and experience with training and mentorship.
- Expertise in modern engineering best practices related to quality, security, process etc. Experience overseeing agile development processes at scale. Knowledge of emerging technologies and innovation trends relevant to the company.
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field
