Soil Scientist studies, investigates, and conducts experiments on different soil/plant types to determine use capabilities of soils, and effects of alternative practices on soil productivity. Applies a wide range concepts, practices, and procedures from two or more specialized fields of science, such as agronomy, soil science, forestry, or agriculture. Being a Soil Scientist may require a bachelor's degree in agricultural sciences or a related field with at least 5 years of work experience. May direct the work of a small group of employees. Additionally, Soil Scientist relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Typically reports to a senior manager and may be considered the lead for a specific area or unit. Crop/Soil Model Scientist

You will create, improve, and scale agricultural systems models to answer some of the most critical questions of our time related to sustainable production in a changing climate.  You will work with software engineers to ensure our core platform and customer-facing applications reflect cutting-edge sustainability science.  Our culture is built on cross-disciplinary collaboration, learning, and rapid prototyping.     Qualifications:

    • Solid foundation in plant physiology, crop science or soil science with particular emphasis on commercial agriculture and current agronomic best practices
    • PhD in relevant discipline (preferred), or MS with equivalent experience (accepted)
    • Experience with developing, implementing or working with process-based models of soil biogeochemistry or crop development, growth and yield for different economically important crops
    • Excellent programming skills in at least one data science language (Python preferred)
    • Excellent collaboration skills

     

    Bonus Qualifications:

    • Knowledge of soil properties and processes
    • Modeling of soil-plant and landscape-level interactions
    • Experience working with different crop models and approaches to apply the models in commercial agriculture
    • Experience with modeling soil carbon and sustainability in cropping systems
    • Understanding of professional software engineering, including automated testing, code review, refactoring, versioning, and databases
    • Experience with mathematics, data science, classical or Bayesian statistics
    • Programming skills in a functional or object-oriented language (e.g. Scala, Java)
