Specialty Pharmacy Technician assists a registered pharmacist with support activities and processes required to dispense high dollar/specialty medications (e.g. Oncology, Multiple Sclerosis). Collects, inputs, and verifies prescription, refill, and patient information. Being a Specialty Pharmacy Technician receives and stocks incoming supplies. May be expected to perform some clerical duties relating to the department. Additionally, Specialty Pharmacy Technician requires a high school diploma. May require Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT). Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Specialty Pharmacy Technician works under moderate supervision.     MALCOLM X COLLEGE

    The Pharmacy Technology Program at Malcolm X College supports students from the communities of Chicago to acquire a standard of academic knowledge in pharmacy which will allow them to practice in the profession as a certified pharmacy technician and/or acquire a level of understanding in pharmacy giving them the opportunity to also pursue the position as a pharmacist.   

    The Pharmacy Technology Advanced Certificate Program is a three-semester program accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) and the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE). Graduates of this program are prepared to sit for industry certification exams including PTCE, ExCPT, and CSPT exams, and obtain jobs as pharmacy technicians. 

    PRIMARY OBJECTIVE

    Reporting to a Director of Health Sciences, the Work Based Learning and Lab Coordinator - Pharmacy Technician plans and coordinates the clinical and work-based component of the Pharmacy Technology Program’s curriculum, working with internal and external stakeholders to ensure students’ supervised learning experiences meet established learning outcomes.  Key responsibilities include student placement through required rotations; monitoring of students’ practicums; and maintaining working relationships with partner sites including hospitals, ambulatory care facilities, and retail pharmacies.

    The Work Based Learning and Lab Coordinator - Pharmacy Technician is also responsible for the lab component of the program’s curriculum, ensuring labs are appropriately set-up for demonstration of techniques and simulation instruction.  Organizes and sets-up materials and equipment for activities; assists Instructors with demonstrating techniques and providing instruction; and ensures the proper inventory of laboratory supplies and maintenance of equipment. Performs related duties as required. 

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES

     

    Work-Based Learning / Clinical 

     

    ·       Develops plans for each semester’s work-based learning/clinical practicums, ensuring the availability of appropriate number of sites, preceptors, and student slots for each student cohort, working in coordination with supervisor and the Clinical Education Manager. 

    ·       Acts as a liaison with program administrators, faculty, and site preceptors to ensure the smooth transition of students from classroom courses to their work-based learning/clinical practicums. 

    ·       Works with student cohort(s) to assign site placements and rotations (inpatient and outpatient setting); responds to and resolves issues relating to sites; and monitors their supervised learning experiences to ensure learning outcomes are met.

    ·       Requests and maintains agency specific documentations including academic and professional forms for preceptors required prior student placement at agency sites.  

    ·        Maintains student health records including vaccination and drug screening records, to ensure they are current and in compliance with program and agency requirements.

    ·       Provides orientation sessions to prepare students for experiential learning experience, instructing students on their roles, responsibilities, and expectations in terms of professional behavior.

    ·       Conducts annual inspections of clinical and work-based learning sites; performs walk-throughs and completes site inspection forms to ensure compliance with program’s accreditation requirements.

    ·       Monitors students’ progress, conducting regular on-site visits to assess appropriateness of activities and obtain preceptors assessment of students’ progress in meeting learning objectives.

    ·       Maintains records of students’ completion of work-based learning/clinical practicum requirements.  Reviews final evaluation forms completed by preceptors documenting students’ competencies.

    ·       Reviews and maintains records of surveys completed by students evaluating their clinical/work-based learning experiences. 

    ·       Conducts surveys with agencies/sites to gather data on their satisfaction with their participation in CCC’s Pharmacy Technology Program.    

    ·       Maintains data on students hired by agencies/sites upon completion of program and attainment of required license.  

    ·       Assists the Clinical Education Manager in identifying and evaluating new agencies to partner with CCC’s Pharmacy Technology Program to provide students with quality supervised learning experiences.  

    Lab Coordination

     

    ·       Prepares lab rooms for Instructor to provide hands-on instruction and training in practice settings on topics such as sterile processing, aseptic IV preparation, and compounding medications.

    ·       Organizes labs by retrieving from and returning to inventory needed equipment and related items; setting up lab demonstrations for Instructor; cleaning up labs once class is completed.

    ·       Sets-up and maintains simulation software for use by students and Instructors during labs. 

    ·       Installs and sets-up simulations for Omnicell electronic cart.

    ·       Monitors students during simulation of inputting prescriptions, printing pharmacy labels; and identifying and purchasing supplies and equipment.

    ·       Assists Instructors in providing hands-on training and instruction to students as needed.

    ·       Maintains equipment and supply items in specified areas in compliance with established procedures and maintains and replaces outdated mock medications and stock bottles.

    ·       Maintains records and monitors inventory levels for all supply items and lab equipment. 

    ·       Prepares purchase requisitions and places orders with vendors to order supplies and equipment.  Receives and verifies accuracy of orders and places in inventory.  Maintains inventory records. 

    QUALIFICATIONS

    ·       Current licensure as a Pharmacy Technician – Certified Designation on license

    ·       Five years of experience in a pharmacy, preferably in both hospital and retail pharmacies, with experience in work-based learning coordination or academic setting preferred   

    OR

    ·       Three years of experience in a pharmacy for individuals possessing an associate’s degree or higher, provided licensure requirement is met

    ·       Knowledge of program accreditation standards and regulatory compliance

    ·       Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills

    ·       Strong organizational and problem-solving skills

    ·       Ability to work within a culturally diverse environment

    ·       Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy in handling sensitive situations

    ·       Ability to use critical thinking to guide decision-making

    ·       Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
