Specialty Pharmacy Technician assists a registered pharmacist with support activities and processes required to dispense high dollar/specialty medications (e.g. Oncology, Multiple Sclerosis). Collects, inputs, and verifies prescription, refill, and patient information. Being a Specialty Pharmacy Technician receives and stocks incoming supplies. May be expected to perform some clerical duties relating to the department. Additionally, Specialty Pharmacy Technician requires a high school diploma. May require Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT). Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Specialty Pharmacy Technician works under moderate supervision. Duties:
- Prepare and package medications for dispensing, including tablets, capsules, liquids, creams, and inhalants
- Assist pharmacists in filling prescriptions accurately and efficiently
- Maintain inventory levels of medications and supplies
- Perform medication reconciliation and ensure proper documentation
- Provide excellent customer service by answering patient questions and resolving medication-related issues
- Collaborate with healthcare professionals to ensure appropriate medication therapy management
- Adhere to all legal requirements, including HIPAA regulations, when handling patient information
Skills:
- Strong knowledge of medical terminology and pharmacy practices
- Proficiency in using pharmacy software systems for prescription processing
- Familiarity with different types of medications and their uses
- Ability to accurately perform mathematical calculations for proper dosage determination
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
- Effective communication skills to interact with patients, healthcare professionals, and colleagues
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy
Requirements:
- Certification as a Pharmacy Technician (CPhT)
- Previous experience working as a Pharmacy Technician in a hospital or retail setting is preferred
- Knowledge of medication administration procedures and protocols
- Understanding of safety practices and adherence to aseptic techniques
