Speech and Language Pathology Director plans and directs the operations of an organization's audiology and speech therapy functions to ensure effective operation and compliance with regulatory standards. Designs policies and processes to ensure efficient service delivery and promote best practices. Being an Speech and Language Pathology Director develops and implements long-term strategic plans and objectives for audiology and speech therapy programs in alignment with the organization's overall objectives. Provides leadership and oversight to the development and expansion of programs or service offerings. Additionally, Speech and Language Pathology Director evaluates program design, assessment tools, and treatment protocols and researches advancements in the field. Develops and manages the budget to allocate resources to support staffing, equipment, and other program needs. Monitors operational and financial metrics to measure the achievement of organizational objectives. Negotiates and selects vendor proposals and manages vendors to maintain inventories and adhere to budgets. May require a master's degree in audiology or speech pathology. Requires State License based on Clinical Specialty. Typically reports to senior management. The Speech and Language Pathology Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. To be an Speech and Language Pathology Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience.     Summary:

    The Speech and Language Pathologist is responsible for designing, organizing and implementing therapy to students who are speech and language impaired.  Speech and Language Pathologists are responsible for the speech and language assessment of students and the preparation of their IEPs, including the goals and objectives.

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    Employee’s duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following

    • Provides appropriate diagnostic speech and language assessments to students to determine their strengths and weaknesses for the use of creating Individualized Education Plans;
    • Progress monitors the programming and services for effectiveness and makes necessary changes to support the growth of the students;
    • Provides quarterly progress reports to parents/guardians, and keeps the classroom teacher and school administrator up to date on student progress;
    • Completes necessary paperwork to maintain compliance with IDEA and MARSE;
    •  Maintains current knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations and abides by said laws and regulations with emphasis on persons with disabilities;
    • Addresses the needs of the school, student, families, and community by collaborating with team members from the Student Development Department and the schools to design a holistic approach to any barriers or problems with the educational process;
    • Promotes family support of students’ learning experiences within the context of culturally responsive understanding and competencies;
    • Provides services to students in ways that build upon individual strengths and offers students maximum opportunities to participate in the planning and direction of their own learning experience;
    • Provides appropriate scheduling that does not interfere with core instruction;
    • Confers with the classroom teacher developing strategies and interventions;
    • Develops and provides training and educational programs that address the goals and mission of the educational institution;
    • Assists students and their families in gaining access to formal and informal community and/or educational resources that will support the goals of the students;
    • Collaborates with outside providers, when necessary, to coordinate services for students who receive speech and language therapy from outside agencies;
    • Assists in the evaluation of effective departmental, school-based, system, community, and statewide programs;
    • Maintains accurate case records and documentation;
    • Participates in appropriate professional development activities to improve knowledge and skills; and,
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

     

     

    Qualifications


    Education/Experience:

    • Holds a master’s degree from an accredited educational program;   
    • Holds a certificate of clinical competence (ASHA);
    • Holds appropriate speech and language certification in the State of Michigan;
    • Preferred experience working with children in a school setting; 
    • Strong communication skills, verbal and written;   
    • Cohesive team ethic; ability to work with others to create comprehensive Independent Educational Plans; and,
    • Proven success in implementing systems for record and case management.
