Strategic Planning Director directs and oversees an organization's strategic and long-range goal planning function. Strategic Planning & Operations Director
What you will do

In this vital role you will partner with senior executives in the office of the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and across other functions within Amgen to set organizational strategy, drive implementation plans for key organizational initiatives, and develop KPIs to inform performance. In addition, you will oversee resource planning and management—both human and financial, internal and external communications/engagement activities, as well as manage the agenda of the CMO Leadership Team. And you will serve as the functional representative to numerous projects and initiatives, while simultaneously responding to new challenges that emerge through the course of business. This role will be 50% allocation to Strategic Planning & Operations (SPO) and 50% to advancing strategic capabilities and transformational initiatives. The role will report to the Senior Vice President, CMO.
The CMO SPO will need to be a strategic problem solver who can serve as a thought partner to senior leadership, while also being able to “dive deep” into key topics of concern for the function. The successful candidate will have a collaborative approach and mentality, seeking to connect people across the organization to the information they need to succeed in their jobs. The CMO SPO will also need to move between tasks and priorities quickly and nimbly, manage a high degree of ambiguity and keep sight of all the moving pieces while knowing which are the most important to advance on any given day.
Act as an advisor and thought partner to the SVP and their direct reports on key activities, and issues within the function.
Support CMO leadership on developing insights-driven strategic roadmap, including capabilities, workforce strategy, digital strategy, etc.; and responding to key strategic issues.
Develop organizational plans for implementation of functional/R&D/Corporate strategies; support or lead implementation activities as necessary.
Lead or contribute to organizational capability build and transformational/process improvement initiatives.
Facilitate functional goal setting process and track progress, results, and performance.
Plan and implement agendas for regular CMO Executive Leadership Team (ELT) meetings to achieve the objectives of the organization.
Partner with HR and Finance to effectively prioritize and manage organizational resources.
Gather, analyze, and synthesize cross-functional information across a variety of sources to turn unstructured business issues and requests into appropriate action plans and projects that result in high quality, meaningful and actionable deliverables.
Develop and implement SVP and functional communication and staff engagement plans.
Actively partner across R&D and other teams to ensure alignment on organizational plans and activities.
Represent the office of the CMO in R&D or Corporate initiatives/process improvement opportunities and serve as the functional change management liaison.
Support the SVP on executive deliverables (e.g. updates to the CEO, materials to the Board of Director).
This position is currently located in our corporate headquarters, located in Thousand Oaks, CA, but alternative locations will be considered for the right candidate.

Doctorate degree and 4 years of scientific and/or operations and/or business experience
OR
Master’s degree and 7 years of scientific and/or operations and/or business experience
OR
Bachelor’s degree and 9 years of scientific and/or operations and/or business experience
Advanced degree or strong demonstration of equivalent combination of relevant educational and professional training experience in leading cross-functional teams
4 years of experience in Biotechnology / Pharmaceutical industry, particularly in Research and Development
7 years of experience in a cross-functional business operations or project management role
Excellent oral and written communication skills, including ability to storyline and prepare executive-level discussion documents
Strong technical skills leveraging digital tools
Strong written, verbal and digital communication skills
Excellent conceptual problem-solving skills with demonstrated ability to bring structure to vaguely defined problems, pragmatically scope problem solving approach, and manage execution
Strong quantitative and qualitative analytic skills
Strong leadership skills with a demonstrated ability to influence different styles
Drug Development knowledge with basic to strong understanding of activities within Research, Preclinical and Clinical Development, Medical and Regulatory
Independent, motivated, team member with experience in a matrix environment

The annual base salary range for this opportunity in the U.S. is $164,255- $197,023.
