Overview

Clean and service the hospital premises inclusive of all patient and non-patient areas and other buildings, inclusive of critical care areas such as: Operating Room, Emergency Room and Intensive Care Unit to ultimately create and maintain a sanitary and safe hospital environment and performs simple, repetitive tasks.

Responsibilities

• Scrub, strip and wax floors with floor machine.  Burnishes floor with floor burnisher, shampoos carpets with hand held machine.
• Sweep flooring with a treated dust mop, then mops same using germicidal solution, as designated by the supervisor.  May be called upon to vacuum carpeted areas and walk off mats at entrances.
• Clean all glass on interior windows, doors and partitions are requested.  Wipes clean shower curtains and changes same as requested.
• Collect all trash from patient’s rooms, utility rooms and offices.  Bags and stores the trash at a designated area for removal by the trashman, who discard the material in the compactor.
• Report any mechanical failures or negative conditions or safety hazards, as observed in assigned area, to supervisor for preparation of a maintenance work order.
• May use strong cleaning chemicals such as stripper, glass cleaner, germicide and bleach to clean all surfaces.
• May be exposed to infectious material and agents while performing assigned duties in a designated work are i.e., patient areas, laboratories, isolation room, operating room and emergency room.
• Give discharge cleaning, spills and breakage priority in cleaning.  May assist nursing staff, when instructed by supervisor, in mobilizing or transporting of patients.  May be assigned to the removal of all waste inclusive of infectious materials and sharps needles.
• Maintain and cleans all equipment in janitor’s closets to a sanitary condition.  Must participate in all in-service training classes and provide signature for attendance sheets.
• Performs other tasks as requested.

Qualifications

Education:

• High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.

Experience:

• Prior experience in hospital or health-related environment cleaning techniques is helpful, but not necessary; but prior professional cleaning employment is recommended.

Knowledge and Skills:

• Must possess the manual ability to perform such tasks as sweeping, mopping, dusting, scrubbing, wiping, polishing and moving of furniture.
• Capable of speaking, reading and writing in English.

Physical Requirements:

• Position requires prolonged periods of standing, reaching, walking throughout the working day. 
• Position will be required to stoops, bends, lifts, carry items weighing up to 25 pounds.
