GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Recreation Coordinator/Teacher Assistant (RC/TA) is a key member of the treatment team. He/She is responsible for maintaining a healthy and safe environment for the adolescents in his/her care. The RC/TA develops a nurturing relationship and uses various therapeutic and socio-recreational activities in guiding adolescents and helping them learn the competencies needed to lead responsible and fulfilling lives. The RC/TA serves as a healthy role model, using established therapeutic techniques, while focusing on the child’s need for recreation and movement. With proper attention being paid to individual needs and differences among adolescents, the RC/TA promotes physical, social, and emotional development. He/She demonstrates professional competency with proper utilization of supervision and consultation with other professionals. This is a part-time 20hrs per week position, may include some holidays.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
I. The RC/TA will assist the Teacher in coordinating, administering, and overseeing recreational activities and physical education for the clients and provide after-school recreation activities.
- Supervise and assist the Teacher with planning physical education and at times assist with other education subjects.
- Responsible for assessing the physical educational needs of each UC in care.
- Adjusts recreation instruction to objectives and individual needs daily.
- Provides individual students with positive and prompt feedback on their physical education progress.
- Helps develop and use resources to support and supplement instructional recreation activities during Physical Education and after school hours.
- Arranges for 7-day Recreation activity ideas for the program, self-planned and or connected to community outings.
- Flexibility and willingness to provide weather and schedule hindering alternatives for recreation activities.
- Works with one-on-one and small groups to remediate diagnosed weaknesses.
- Serves as a substitute teacher in the absence of the Teacher.
- Provide access to medical care (i.e. basic first aid, assessing need and arranging for urgent or emergency care.)
- Fosters a stable and therapeutic environment by maintaining the values and principles of the Therapeutic Group Home philosophy, Risking Connections, while focusing on the meaning of behavior and trauma histories of the residents.
- Promotes a positive, communicative environment with all client providers and assists clients in maintaining appropriate contact.
- Assist in implementing of plans for cultural and recreational activities, mentoring opportunities, community connections and other avenues designed to broaden the residents’ positive life experiences.
- Maintain a safe, harm-free environment for all residents as follows:
- Provides a healthy physical recreation activity that will be mindful of the individual’s physical limits.
- Will practice safe physical movement and avoid stunts and or dangerous maneuvers during recreation time with the clients.
- Protects residents from aggressive behaviors of other residents by preventing physical fights, verbal abuse, sexual harassment, hazing, theft and borrowing of property.
- Monitor the behavior of visitors and report any unauthorized people on the grounds of the residence.
- Assure fire prevention measures are followed.
- Document and report all incidents of risky or unsafe resident behavior (i.e. substance abuse, SIB, etc.)
- Provide and maintain a consistent, structured, yet flexible framework for recreation and physical education.
- Foster positive resident behaviors by modeling and teaching constructive communication and conflict resolution.
- Transport residents to recreational activities, bus and train terminals and other planned excursions.
- Communicate with parents/guardians, coworkers, and external professionals (e.g., ORR, DCF Workers) in a professional and timely manner.
- Lead resident discussion groups to convey instructions, share information, organize group activities and resolve conflicts.
- Completes daily and monthly reports, critical incidents and assigned paperwork in an accurate and timely manner.
- Attend staff meetings and participates in Agency training programs as assigned by the Supervisor and/or the Program Director.
- Completes other duties as assigned by the Program Director.
QUALIFICATIONS: The RC/TA is selected based on formal training or real-world experience working with adolescents. They generally hold a minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent. They have the experience, characteristics, temperament, and background that enables them to be able to provide care, management, nurturance, and a safe and structured environment for the adolescents in the program. In selecting staff, NCSS strives to address issues of cultural and linguistic competency, and Spanish speaking ability is a hiring requirement.
The RC/TA is required to be able to operate a personal computer with proficiency in the use of web-based platforms, PDF, and Microsoft Word. The applicant must pass a suitability and determination background screening, a national background check conducted by fingerprints, a state police background check, a physical and vaccinations, a drug screening exam, a CT DCF protective service background check, and a motor vehicle check.
