  • Duties

    As a Biologist within Wetland and Aquatic Research Center, some of your specific duties will include:

    • Participating in planning and execution of complex studies and investigations concerning biological, chemical, and physical processes that affect ecosystems.
    • Conducting routine field experiments to test scientific hypotheses. Deploying remote data-collection systems and manipulatinganalyses data from these systems.
    • Performing assignments in planning the approach and collecting data needed to carry out less complex studies or portions of larger biological science investigations. Performing data analysis and writing reports to evaluate findings.
    • Planning, organizing, and implementing limited biological investigations that affect wildlife and/or fishery resources and their habitat conditions.
    • Conducting limited program analyses and reviewing results of small studies or investigations.
    • Operating four-wheel drive vehicles, including all-terrain vehicles, off of maintained roads when necessary and tailer all-terrain vehicles on trailers up to 20 feet in length.
    • Operating a motorboat in dynamic environments with strong currents, large waves, potentially severe weather, and frequent navigation hazards.
    • Operating a government vehicle as an incidental driver.
    Physical Demands:

    The field work requires some physical exertion such as walking over wet, rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. Laboratory work requires moderate physical ability and agility and dexterity to manipulate samples and operate equipment.

    Work Environment:

    Work is performed in an office, laboratory, and/or in the field. The office is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. Temperature and weather extremes may be encountered in the performance of the outdoor work. Field and laboratory duties may require the use of special protective gear. The incumbent is expected to conduct duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to endanger self, fellow workers, or property with which entrusted.

    Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?
    • Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. Individuals who have delinquent account balances from a previous Government charge card will be required to satisfy their existing obligation before a new card can be issued.
    • You will be required to operate a government-owned or -leased vehicle in the performance of your official duties. Applicants for this position must meet the following requirements: (1) possess a valid State license, and (2) possess a safe driving record. If selected, you will be required to provide proof of a valid State license & a copy of your driving record.
    • Taking and passing a pre-employment medical examination at Federal expense is required due to the physical demands of this job.
    • You must be able to take and pass the USGS Motorboat Operator Certification Course (MOCC) within six (6) months of employment.
    • A background investigation will be required for this position. Continued employment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.

    Qualifications

    BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Biologist, all grade levels.

    A. Degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

    *OR* B. Combination of education and experience-courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.     For GS-09:

    In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-09 level:

    **Master's or equivalent graduate degree in biology or other directly related field of study or 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education (36 semester hours, 54 quarter hours or the equivalent) leading to a master's degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or other related disciplines if it provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position to be filled.

    **OR one year of appropriate professional experience in biology that is equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal service.

    Examples of GS-07 level work may include: 1) advanced skills and experience deploying telemetry tracking tags (e.g., satellite, acoustic) on multiple large marine vertebrate species including sharks, sea turtles and sport fish species; 2) assisting with planning, organizing, and implementing scientific investigations; 3) performing data analyses on portions of larger scientific investigations; 4) and receiving training in gathering, organizing, and interpreting biological, ecological, pathological, public use, or other information pertinent to scientific studies and/or scientific investigations. For examples 1-4, the work involved following established methods and procedures, or detailed instructions; using some judgment in applying basic principles and procedures; solving minor problems and making routine decisions.
