Job Summary

White Rock Medical Center is currently seeking a Switchboard Operator in the Communications Department for PRN opportunities. Hours include 3pm-11pm or 11pm-7am. Flexible Days.

To be successful in this role, you will be proficient in communicating effectively and efficiently. This includes overhead announcements, and group paging to mobile devices via the hospital’s paging system. Additionally, the operator is responsible for monitoring the hospital monitor panel, security cameras and responding to hospital codes appropriately.

Essential Functions:

• Greets patients and visitors either by phone or in person providing customer service and exhibiting knowledge and skills to effectively communicate with each specific age group.
• Communicates with sensitivity to patients, taking their concerns, stress level into consideration.
• Does not assume an elderly patient may be confused.
• Is aware there may be physical or mental limitations, and asks for verbal confirmations of understanding, if appropriate.
• Ensures effective communication by speaking in a tone of voice that can be heard by the patients.
• Conducts overhead paging of physicians, staff and hospital employees, following physician preferences as closely as possible.
• Activates beepers for hospital staff and personnel in a clear, professional and timely manner, expediting those for administrative and emergency staff and personnel.
• Operates T.T.Y. telephone equipment to promote daily communications with the hearing impaired as required.
• Conducts Emergency Procedures as outlined in department quick-steps and procedures. This includes monitoring of 81 calls and the emergency panels as well as participation in Code Blue, Code White, Code, Red, Code Pink, Code Orange, Code Yellow, etc.
• Implements procedures correctly in the event of a Code Brown, severe weather alert, distribution of walkie-talkies to spotters and security, MI alerts, Stroke Alerts, and Rapid Response team calls.
• Prepares emergency call list daily and/or distributes to the Nursing Administrator.
• Monitors Fire Alarms, Code Blue Alarms, Medical Gas Panel, Generator Panel, Telephone Room, Sewage, Central Plant, Security Alarms (materials management, endoscopy, emergency room, gift shop, admitting, pharmacy, business office, doors), and Professional Building I, II, and West Tower (includes security and elevator alarms and appropriately alerting maintenance and/or security staff for problems or emergencies).
• Issues hospital keys according to policy. This includes logging the keys in and out appropriately and following up on any keys not returned.
• Takes messages for any department who is away from their phones for any length of time, such as Administration, Facilities, Physical Therapy, etc. Also takes messages for departments after hours.
• Takes messages for the facility services when the telephone is unattended and documents all calls. Dispatches the engineer or takes a message for staff.
• Performs Call screening for nursing units, patients who do not want to receive calls or are no-information patients, billing, and administration.

• High school diploma or equivalent

• A minimum of 6 months' customer service is required, with switchboard experience in a hospital setting preferred

• Excellent communication and organizational skills are required
