  • QUALIFICATIONS: Associates Degree required, Bachelors Degree preferredExperience working with children, young adults, or in human services related field, special education experience highly desirableAbility to work with students with a variety of disabilities including, but not limited to social emotional, behavioral, non-verbal, non-ambulatory, etc.Outstanding interpersonal skillsAbility to work collaboratively to address concerns and resolve conflict in a professional, courteous mannerPHYSICAL DEMANDS: Physically capable of carrying out the daily responsibilities of the classroom including (but not limited to): consistently attending, working and standing for long periods of time, transferring students into and out of various equipment, lifting up to 50 pounds, working with students on the floor, moving quickly when needed in response to student behavior, and participating in physical interventions if necessary to keep the student or others in the environment safe.POSITION SUMMARY: The Teaching Assistant works directly under the supervision of the teacher and acts as a member of a students multidisciplinary team in providing academic, behavioral, vocational and therapeutic support to students throughout the day; implements direct instruction, actively supervises students, and ensures that the physical and emotional needs of children are being met on a daily basis. In addition to the above, teaching assistant position at Francis Wyman Elementary School provides services to students with multiple, severe disabilities. Appropriate candidates must be willing to support personal care needs of students including, supporting in the bathroom (including changing diapers), support with feeding and other activities of daily living. Teaching assistants in this classroom will need to support students in transitioning from various pieces of equipment, physically support their participation in classroom activities and learn to use the various assistive technology devices that support students' communication and access to curriculum.
