    PURPOSE: The primary purpose of this job is to perform instructional tasks and record keeping in a school setting to assist teaching staff.      

     

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Performs some or all of the following tasks. Other duties may be assigned.

    • Assists teacher or professional staff in selecting, obtaining and developing instructional materials.
    • Assists students, individually or in groups, with lesson assignments to present or reinforce learning concepts.
    • Presents subject matter to students, utilizing variety of methods and techniques such as lecture, discussion, and supervised role playing.
    • Confers with teaching staff on progress of student(s).
    • Makes recommendations regarding instructional or other needs of students.
    • Participates in developing and implementing behavior management plan for individual students.
    • Tests student’s ability and progress as directed by teacher.
    • Assists staff with record keeping, copying filing and grading papers.
    • Monitors and assists students as needed.
      • Administers medication as directed by district nurse, including Epinephrine, Glucagon, and insulin injections as directed.
      • Maintains records of all medication received and given to students with appropriate parental authorization.
      • Assists students with disabilities; includes assisting medically fragile students with blood glucose monitoring, feeding tubes, nebulizers, rectal valium, diapering, etc.
      • Performs first aid to injured students; complies with all blood borne pathogens/OSHA procedures for cleanup of body fluid spills.
      • Routinely provides screening of students for communicable diseases and informs parents of communicable diseases detected as directed by building administrator.
      • Notifies building administrator and/or district nurse of all students with signs of communicable diseases.
      • Reports students with communicable diseases to Health Department as directed by building administrator.
      • Assists with district health screening program.
      • Confers with parents, health professionals, district nurse and students to arrange health and dental care from local businesses at no cost.
      • Maintains a daily log of health room visits; documents treatment and procedure of care provided for each visit.
      • Orders supplies and maintains inventory for the health room.
      • Assists with scheduling required trainings for building staff and maintaining training records.
      • Responds calmly to emergencies and initiates 911 emergency calls when appropriate.
      • Designs and sets up report cards in the computer (AS400); Maintains all report card and transcript information in the computer. Processes progress and grade cards and reports.
    • Other duties as assigned.

     

    Marginal Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Monitors and assists students in lunch room.
    • Assists with loading and unloading children from buses.
    • Assists teacher, when directed, in communicating with parents regarding student’s progress in general.

    Qualifications:   To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility as listed above satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.     • Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or equivalent. Must meet No Child Left Behind (NCLB) requirements; AA Degree or two years college or pass a district approved assessment in Reading, Writing, Math and instructional strategies. One to three months related experience and/or training.
    • Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedural manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of students, staff and parents.
    • Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
    • Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where standardization exists.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
    • Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Internet software and word processing.
    • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Valid drivers’ license. Blood borne pathogens instruction. Other certificates as required by District.
    • Interpersonal Skills: Works well with others.  Focuses on solving conflict; maintains confidentiality; listens to others without interrupting; keeps emotions under control; remains open to others’ ideas. Contributes to building a positive team spirit.
