The Blade, a division of Block Communications Inc., has been serving news to northwest Ohio and southeastern Michigan since 1835 and is the most trusted local news source. The Blade continues to evolve and deliver credible, informative, and daily content both in print and digital formats.
The Blade is looking for a City Editor to join our award winning newsroom.
The City Editor reports directly to the Managing Editor and is responsible for the following functions at The Blade:
- Oversee daily local news coverage, breaking news and enterprise stories.
- Supervise metro newsroom staff, including scheduling and story planning and enforcement of deadlines. Provide story coaching and editing when necessary.
- Execute new ideas for digital coverage in an effort to move the company forward on all digital platforms.
- Participate in the development of daily and weekly story budgets.
- Oversee and quality check publications on Blade digital platforms.
- Work with other editors to direct reporters and handle breaking news coverage.
- Confer with managing editor and executive editor regarding placement and emphasis of developing stories.
- Actively participate in designing a staffing plan and training newsroom staff.
- Collaborate with other department managers to support overall Company goals and objectives.
- Follow and enforce the Company’s policies and procedures at all times.
- Manage additional responsibilities and projects as assigned in support of business objectives.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree, preferably in journalism – required
- 2 years of news experience, preferably on digital platforms – required
- 2 years of managerial/supervisory experience – required
- Copy editing experience – required
- Knowledge of social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat – required
- Strong knowledge of Blade and AP style.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills as well as strong interpersonal skills;
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail;
- Ability to effectively manage and mentor staff;
- Display exceptional work ethic, time management, and organization skills.
