Technical Librarian develops and maintains a collection of technical information and provides research and reference support to researchers, scientists, and engineers. Builds an extensive network of technical information resources and contacts from various sources like government agencies, universities, professional and industry associations to obtain the required information. Being a Technical Librarian communicates with researchers to develop and maintain a broad knowledge and understanding of the organization's relevant topics and effectively target technical publications as information sources. Creates abstracts, bibliographies, and metadata to classify the information. Additionally, Technical Librarian obtains translations of literature as needed. Supports and maintains the library's technology infrastructure and information retrieval tools. Typically requires a master's degree in library science. Typically reports to a manager. The Technical Librarian work is closely managed. Works on projects/matters of limited complexity in a support role. To be a Technical Librarian typically requires 0-2 years of related experience.   • This recruitment will be used to fill a vacancy at the Main Library Branch; however, this recruitment may also be used to establish an eligibility list to fill the Gateway Library Branch Librarian III position and possible future vacancies in other library branch locations.  The current vacancy at the Main Library coordinates the following program areas for the branch:  Youth Services, Reference (Adult) Services, and THINKSpot.  The current vacancy is also a branch level leadership role as part of the Main Library Leadership Team and engages in system-wide collaboration with the Librarian III colleagues at the other branch locations.    

    A Librarian III is responsible for planning, organizing, and coordinating the activities of a specialized functional program area and/or system-wide program area of the library.  Program areas may include:  Automation/Technology and Training, Collection Development Coordination, Youth Services, Reference Services, THINKspot (Collaborative Workspace), and special projects and initiatives.  Duties may include:  planning and coordinating program objectives; preparing written documentation and technical reports; and assisting with preparing and monitoring of a program budget.  Responsibilities may include supervision of professional or paraprofessional classes.  This class performs related duties as required.

    This class is distinguished from the Librarian II class by a greater degree of autonomy in handling day-to-day decisions of a functional program, the more diverse and complex nature of assignments, and the greater independence under which the work is performed.  Supervision may be received from a Branch Coordinator or Administrative Supervisor, depending on assignment, who reviews work through conferences, meetings, reports, and results achieved.  Night and weekend work is required.  This class is FLSA exempt-professional.

    Minimum Qualifications Required.  Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master’s Degree in Library Science, Library Science and Information Studies, or Information Studies from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited school.  Considerable (3 - 5 years) professional library experience.
