Technical Librarian develops and maintains a collection of technical information and provides research and reference support to researchers, scientists, and engineers. Builds an extensive network of technical information resources and contacts from various sources like government agencies, universities, professional and industry associations to obtain the required information. Being a Technical Librarian communicates with researchers to develop and maintain a broad knowledge and understanding of the organization's relevant topics and effectively target technical publications as information sources. Creates abstracts, bibliographies, and metadata to classify the information. Additionally, Technical Librarian obtains translations of literature as needed. Supports and maintains the library's technology infrastructure and information retrieval tools. Typically requires a master's degree in library science. Typically reports to a manager. The Technical Librarian work is closely managed. Works on projects/matters of limited complexity in a support role. To be a Technical Librarian typically requires 0-2 years of related experience.     Role:    

    Answers patron requests for information and assistance, coordinates programming within the branch, and acts as a staff resource.

    Major Duties and Responsibilities:  

      

    40% - IN BRANCH PROGRAMMING - Working independently or as part of a team, develops relevant programs by using project management and outcomes-based planning and evaluation tools; delivers programs to audiences within the library, and assists Community Relations and Marketing with recruiting attendees in order to provide benefit to patrons, promote use of library resources and represent the library district to the community.     15% - PATRON ASSISTANCE – Receives referrals from Library Associates working with patrons, assists patrons in locating the information needed through the use of library resources and Internet sites; provides in-depth reference services and locates requested materials and information sources in order to satisfy patron requests for library materials and information; stays well informed as a reader’s advisor; and assists patrons with circulation functions which include, but are not limited to, issuing and updating library cards, checking-out and renewing materials, placing holds, and addressing account problems.     15% - TECHNOLOGY INSTRUCTION – Receives referrals from Library Associates working with patrons, applies digital technology skills to assist patrons in using library technology; identifies opportunities for formal training in the library and advises patrons on availability of classroom and individual technology instruction. Accommodates different learning styles, assesses the needs of the learner and collaborates with the learner to meet the learner’s needs. (Essential)  

      

    15% - COLLECTION MAINTENANCE – Maintains and creates web content, recommends additions to the collection, evaluates weeding reports and recommends removal of items, notifying the Collection Librarian of the discarded item in order to keep collection appealing, current and useful. (Essential)  

      

    5% - STAFF RESOURCE – Acts as a resource for staff by providing in-depth reference assistance, reference consultation, mentoring and training of staff in providing reference and reader’s advisory services in order to provide dynamic services to patrons. (Essential)  

      

    10% - OTHER DUTIES – Creates displays, bibliographies, and blogs, recommends budgets, requests equipment, and supply purchases, prepares statistical reports, acts as Person In Charge (PIC), and assists Supervisor with projects in order to ensure the smooth operation of the library. (Non-Essential)  

      

      

    Minimum Requirements:    

    Education:    

    Master of Library and Information Science    

     *Applicants who do not have an MLIS but are looking to pursue and receive the degree are still encouraged to apply.  

      

    Experience:    

    Two or more years of experience working in a library (preferred)  

    Able to read, write, and speak Spanish fluently (required)
