    WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:
    The Division of Statewide Services provides technical and specialized services to the other divisions of the Department of Public Safety, local, State and Federal Law enforcement, and the public at large. The Division consists of the Criminal Records and Identification Bureau, Scientific Crime Detection Laboratory, Alaska Public Safety Communication Services, and Information Services.

    Information Services develops and maintains all computerized resources for the Department of Public Safety's information systems and provides support for over 5,000 users statewide. Supported systems range geographically across the entirety of the State and include the management of hardware, custom and 3rd party software, web applications, databases, data facilities, vehicle-based systems, and interfaces to partner law enforcement agencies and federal authorities.

    The Technical Support Team supports the full life-cycle of end user PCs and Laptops, and provides tier 1 support for specialty software; working closely with IT teams within the department and the State of Alaska Office of Information Technology.
    This position will work under the general supervision of the Data Processing Manager III, but should require little supervision for day-to-day tasking and team management. All DPS Information Services employees are expected to provide occasional afterhours support as required. Other duties may be assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the applicant with competencies in:


    • Data Systems: Knowledge of computer hardware and software development and systems as they apply to the conception, specification, analysis, planning, development, installation, test, modification and use of data handling and computing systems.
    • Database Management Systems: Knowledge of the uses of database management systems and software to control the organization, storage, retrieval, security, and integrity of data.
    • Leadership: Influences, motivates, and challenges others; adapts leadership styles to a variety of situations.
    • Developing Others: Develops the ability of others to perform and contribute to the organization by providing ongoing feedback and by providing opportunities to learn through formal and informal methods.
    • Critical Thinking: Uses logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
    • Client Engagement/Change Management: Knowledge of the impact of change on people, processes, procedures, leadership, and organizational culture; knowledge of change management principles, strategies, and techniques required for effectively planning, implementing, and evaluating change in the organization.
    Equivalent to those typically gained by:
    Training in information technology or a similar field with progressively responsible professional experience that developed expertise in one or more IT functions and the provision of IT services to business and public users and includes prior lead and/or supervisory responsibility.

    “Progressively responsible” means indicating growth and/or advancement in complexity, difficulty, or level of responsibility.

    Positions may be identified as being significantly involved in the following options: operations; programming/analysis; specialized support, such as technical services, data communications, data base (DBMS) administration information management, etc. Systems software and hardware used must have been equivalent in size and complexity to computer systems used by the State of Alaska.
