Requisition Id 10140 Overview: The Emerging Technology Analysis (ETA) effort at Oak Ridge National Laboratory seeks applicants with experience and technical knowledge in researching emerging technologies such as quantum information systems, additive manufacturing, artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, and biotechnology. The applicant will report to and work with the senior scientist leading the ETA effort and be responsible for analyzing unclassified and classified information, producing written products, presenting results to audiences with disparate backgrounds, and proposing new topics to aid in understanding and qualifying disruptive technologies. Applicants are not expected to be an expert in all areas, but a broad interest in mission-focused science and/or engineering is expected. The ETA effort operates under the Field Intelligence Operations Division (FIOD) within the National Security Sciences Directorate (NSSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). Major Job Duties and Responsibilities: The applicant will be responsible for providing technical expertise and analytic support with the following major duties and responsibilities: * Perform multi-disciplined unclassified and classified analysis to identify threats and vulnerabilities engendered by emerging and disruptive technologies
* Interact with subject matter experts (SME) from NSSD and other ORNL directorates/divisions in identified technical areas and harness SME input into analytical products
* Generate analytical assessments and products on emerging and disruptive technical applications and issues that can be shared with peers, management, and sponsors
* Produce peer-reviewed papers and briefings of both unclassified and classified analytical assessments regarding threats, vulnerabilities, and mitigations
* Present both unclassified and classified briefings regarding analytical assessments
* Interact and collaborate with government agencies and members of the national security community.
* Abide by all environmental, safety, health and quality requirements and implement practices per ORNL's Standards-based Management System (SBMS).
* Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation of the Directorate's values and ethics.
* Occasional domestic travel Required Qualifications: * B.S. in science, technology, engineering, math (STEM), or other relevant technical discipline with 8-15 years of experience, or M.S. in STEM or other relevant technical discipline with 7-12 years of experience, or a PhD in STEM or other relevant technical discipline with 2-5 years of experience
* Strong interest in emerging and disruptive technologies and applications with a focus on identifying threats, vulnerabilities, and mitigations
* Demonstrated willingness to acquire new knowledge and learn new skills is essential.
* Strong written and oral communication skills are essential.
* Ability to work independently and collaborate with colleagues, ORNL SMEs, and outside collaborators
* Ability to interact with sponsors and officials from other government agencies
* Occasional domestic travel
* This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Top-Secret Q clearance with Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) access from the Department of Energy Preferred Qualifications: * Prior experience or knowledge related to emerging technical matters such as quantum engineering issues, concerns with AI/ML, or systems engineering challenges
* Experience working with the Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Defense (DoD) or other government agencies is highly desirable.
* Active Q and/or TS//SCI clearance is a plus. Special Requirement:
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse Program (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program. Additionally, the position will also be subject to random polygraph testing.
