Telecommunications Director is responsible for the strategic planning and design of an organization's telecommunications systems. Develops policies and procedures for installing and maintaining telecommunications equipment. Being a Telecommunications Director plans and manages complex installation or repair projects. Assesses current and future telecommunications needs and researches and plans improvements to meet those requirements. Additionally, Telecommunications Director trains and develops staff. May require a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a director. The Telecommunications Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be a Telecommunications Director typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience. Three years of administrative, technical, or professional experience which demonstrates a good knowledge of the functional and operational requirements and capabilities in one or more types of telecommunications fields such as telephone systems engineering, broadcasting, satellite systems, telecommunications regulations, data communications, or telecommunications management.
AND
Four years of education in electronic engineering, physics, industrial engineering, communications, public utilities or a closely related field above the high school level.
Additional qualifying experience may substitute year-for-year for the required education.

Requires occasional travel within the State to plan, organize, and monitor project work at sites; often in remote areas.
Requires successfully completing and maintaining an Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN) background check and security clearance conducted by the Department of Public Safety. Fingerprinting is required.
Persons not currently registered by the State of Alaska, but who are registered in a state, territory, or possession of the United States, the District of Columbia, or a foreign country recognized by the State Board of Registration for Architects, Engineers, and Land Surveyors eligible for comity in accordance with AS 08.48.191(b), may apply for vacancies in this job class. Persons qualifying under this provision must become registered in Alaska as an Electrical Engineer within one year of hire and sign an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.
This position requires the incumbent to submit to a fingerprint based criminal history background check. Due to the sensitive nature of this position, and required access to APSIN, an applicant with criminal convictions will not move forward in the selection process.
