Position Description:
The Engineering Training Resource Assistant is a temporary position and located within Salmon Challis National Forest to support the National Forest Service Engineering Program. This role encompasses specific disciplines such as General Engineering, Civil Engineering, Engineering Technical, Survey Technical, Hydrology technical, and other related disciplines within the GS-0800 Group. This position is designed to provide a career-oriented introduction to the background, philosophy, concepts, and scope of the Forest Service Engineering Program. Assignments are temporary in nature and, in conjunction with formal education from an accredited educational institution, the RA will gain the necessary competencies for future career opportunities in the field of Engineering.
Responsibilities:
Assisting in projects such as road and bridge design/construction, as well as conducting inventories of facilities, road bridges, and trail bridges
Training is provided in the principles, concepts, work processes, and regulations of one or more functional areas of Engineering.
Work assignments are typically well-defined and designed to provide experience in a variety of activities.
Receives assignments in various Engineering projects to develop an understanding of program concepts and operations, comprehend the total mission, organizational/functional interrelationships, and gain work experience through temporary assignments in the Engineering field.
Receives formal and on-the-job training in OPM, Department of Agriculture and Forest Service policies, rules, regulations, and procedures.
Instructed on the use of personal computers, file and data management, and provide Engineering Support by assisting with drawings (learning AutoCAD), conducting fieldwork such as taking photos/notes and assisting with surveying, and performing data entry tasks.
Qualifications:
Major studies relevant to this position include: Civil Engineering, Geology, Hydrology
Ability to take direction well and adapt to frequent changes in project priorities
Knowledge of CAD, C3D, and GIS
Knowledge of basic engineering principles
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Willingness to learn and take initiative
Experience or willingness to learn engineering software
No professional experience required
Physical requirements include ability to work in remote forest locations (hike/walk on rough terrain), operate government vehicles, and engage in minor lifting such as transportation of surveying equipment to and from project sites
Ability to multitask, work independently, and communicate effectively
