Tool Design Engineer designs and develops tools and machinery used to facilitate and optimize manufacturing processes. Reviews product design and build requirements to determine tooling concepts, design options, testing plans, and specifications. Being a Tool Design Engineer develops designs for fixtures, jigs, gauges, cutting and forming tools, carts, racks, and other items to support production. Utilizes Computer-Aided Design (CAD) to create accurate, complete, and concise design models and documentation to fabricate tools. Additionally, Tool Design Engineer estimates costs, resource requirements, and materials required for tools. May manage the sourcing, quoting, or procurement of purchased tools. Typically requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Tool Design Engineer work is closely managed.     Responsibilities:

    • Review technical specifications, engineering drawings/blueprints, and manufacturing data, collaborating with engineering and manufacturing teams to address design challenges related to material properties, dimensional tolerances, and cost-effective manufacturing processes.
    • Apply mathematical and geometric principles to develop tool configurations.
    • Utilize standard components from vendors in tool designs.
    • Manage all phases of New Product Introduction (NPI), including tooling, customer service, and production control until production readiness.
    • Develop manufacturing processes, create Bills of Materials (BOMs) and routers, and design and implement manufacturing tools and fixtures.
    • Analyze process data to enhance tooling and manufacturing processes.
    • Lead new manufacturing process projects for transition to production operations.

    Education and Experience:

    • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college/university or certification as a journeyman toolmaker.
    • Minimum of five years of practical experience in tooling; experience in sheet metal fabrication is advantageous.
    • Proficiency in reading blueprints and interpreting work instructions.
    • Ability to effectively apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles.
    • Proficiency in Solidworks or similar Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software and MS Office suite.
    • Strong mathematical skills, including plane and solid geometry, and trigonometry.
    • Problem-solving skills and openness to input on tool design concepts.
    • Ability to interpret various forms of instructions.
    • Capacity to manage multiple projects concurrently.
    • Knowledge of rapid tool prototyping is desirable.
    • Familiarity with Material Requirements Planning (MRP) systems.
