Tool Design Engineer designs and develops tools and machinery used to facilitate and optimize manufacturing processes. Reviews product design and build requirements to determine tooling concepts, design options, testing plans, and specifications. Being a Tool Design Engineer develops designs for fixtures, jigs, gauges, cutting and forming tools, carts, racks, and other items to support production. Utilizes Computer-Aided Design (CAD) to create accurate, complete, and concise design models and documentation to fabricate tools. Additionally, Tool Design Engineer estimates costs, resource requirements, and materials required for tools. May manage the sourcing, quoting, or procurement of purchased tools. Typically requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Tool Design Engineer work is closely managed.   • Job Summary: 

    Create, monitor and maintain inventory; including raw materials, tool crib, consumables and other.  Procure supplies, raw materials, parts and assemblies necessary to support production.  Write requisitions, contact vendors and exercise good judgment.  Repair and coordinate maintenance on all tooling and equipment checked in and out of tool crib.  Occasionally make purchases at prices consistent with quality and quantity specifications. Ensures timely delivery of materials to their respective fabrication, machining, or assembly areas.  Ensures loading and unloading of material in a timely manner.  Ensures proper inspection of received material and put into stock in proper location.  Operate various types and size lift trucks, mobile yard crane, and overhead cranes.

     

    Essential Functions: 

    • Maintain tool crib and associated inventories
    • Must create, monitor, and maintain comprehensive inventory records
    • Requisition consumables and receive consumables
    • Must have knowledge of hand-tools and welding and machining consumables
    • Must be able to maintain tracking system by employee and tools
    • Must be able to repair and/or coordinate repairs of all equipment checked in and out of tool crib
    • Requisition employee purchases and receive and distribute them accordingly
    • Ability to maintain minimums and maximums of welding and machining consumables, i.e. gases, wire, and shop supplies, drills, end mills, and carbides
    • Able to repair or install new parts on existing tools
    • Basic understanding of mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical equipment
    • Basic understanding and ability to read blueprints to identify parts.
    • Must have basic math skills
    • Good communication skills
    • Maintain safe working environment

     

    Comply with all material handling as follows:

    • Delivery of materials from stock or remnant to respective areas
    • Delivery of fabricated, machined, blasted, and painted parts to respective areas
    • Loading and unloading of parts and material for customers and vendors
    • Receive, inventory, and inspect all incoming material and stock in proper    location
    • Ensure timely delivery of material to their respective fabrication or assembly areas
    • Maintain proper documentation of inventory
    • Responsible for inspections and care of equipment
    • Strong knowledge of computers and various programs and willing to learn others including Petersen Incorporated related software and programs
    • Ensure that all orders received in the Shipping Department are properly documented in AX, Fabtrol and stocked in a designated area

     

    Ship out-going items by:

    • Arranging for fork lift operators to load truck
    • Manage disposition of all obsolete or excess parts
    • Ensure conformity to all Shipping and Receiving procedures
    • Ensure proper protection of company inventories
    • File packing lists, etc. by job number
    • Interface with Production Control, Procurement, Project Management, and Sales inform them of orders that are incomplete
    • Serves as coordinator with Production Supervisors on material activity

     

    Essential Mental Functions:

    Must be able to understand implicit and explicit instructions and react favorable in all work situations.  Must be able resolve problems, handle conflict, and make effective decisions under pressure.  

     

    Essential Physical Functions:

    Requires lifting of at least 50lbs, stooping, bending and stretching to accomplish assigned duties.  Requires sitting (forklift) for long periods of time and may require standing, bending and stooping for extended periods of time.

     

    Safety Requirements:

    Must not pose a direct threat or significant risk of substantial harm to the safety or health of himself/herself or others.

    Must be committed to a high standard of safety and be willing and able to comply with all safety laws and all of the employer's safety policies and rules and must be willing to report safety violations and potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory or management personnel.

     

    Equipment Used (but not limited to):

    Forklift (All sizes), Company trucks (Those that do not require a CDL), Truck tie downs, Yard crane and shop overhead cranes, Man lifts.

    Availability:

    Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance at such level as is determined in the employer's sole discretion.

    Must be available and willing to work overtime as the employer determines is necessary or desirable to meet its business needs.

     

    Travel:

    Must be available and willing to travel as the employer determines is necessary or desirable to meet its business needs.

     

    Working Conditions:

    Works inside and outside a typical fabrication shop surrounding.   Occasionally called upon to work overtime.  Working conditions may vary according to weather.   Requires ability to work in heat and cold.
