The City of Staunton, Virginia (est. pop. 25,750) is located in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley nestled between the Blue Ridge and Allegheny mountains. The City encompasses an area of 19.98 square miles and is located approximately two hours southwest of Washington D.C.
The City is seeking an Economic Development Director who will have the exciting opportunity to shape the city's economic landscape and foster growth. The Director will collaborate with stakeholders to create clear objectives and strategies and engage with the business community to build relationships and drive collaborative efforts towards shared economic goals. Reporting to the City Manager, this position provides direct oversight of two full-time staff and an Economic Development Office FY2024 budget of $1.27 million.
LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
Staunton Crossing Project. The Economic Development Director will have the opportunity to lead the dynamic Staunton Crossing initiative to further enhance the City’s economic landscape, capitalizing on its strategic location and expansive potential for growth. As a key leader of this ongoing initiative, the Director plays a crucial role in shaping Staunton's future as a vibrant and thriving community.
Define and Establish the City’s Economic Vision. The Economic Development Director will be provided with the opportunity to architect a comprehensive roadmap that capitalizes on the City’s unique strengths and fosters sustainable growth. Through collaborative efforts with internal and external stakeholders, the Director will establish clear objectives and strategies, effectively communicating and inspiring others to rally behind their vision.
Stakeholder Engagement and Relationship Building. This role requires the ability to cultivate and nurture strong relationships with the business community. The Economic Development Director will drive collaborative efforts towards shared economic goals, building trust, facilitating communication, and fostering a cohesive network that enhances the City’s economic vitality.
Uniontown Neighborhood Action Plan and West End Revitalization. The Economic Development Director will have a direct hand and be a crucial partner in furthering strategies and actions to rebuild and promote these communities as vibrant areas that will have diverse business opportunities, cultural offerings, and great potential for economic growth, stability and resiliency.
The hiring range for this position is $115,000 - $140,000 based on qualifications and experience. Excellent benefits include participation in the Virginia Retirement System, vacation and sick leave, group life insurance, medical insurance, professional dues, and conference expenses. Relocation allowance of up to $5,000 is provided.
Graduation from an accredited college or university with extensive work in planning, economics, or business administration or the equivalent amount of training and experience in economic development is required. Master’s degree in public administration, business administration or related field and extensive experience at the executive level with municipal government is preferred. Certified Economic Developer through IEDC is preferred. The candidate will be well-versed in local government finance and budget protocols, business finance, including public/private partnerships, construction financing, loans, pro forma statements, and incentive packages. A Virginia Driver’s license or ability to obtain is required.
