    Definition of Classification:

    The Diversity Initiatives Specialist (DIS) supports the activities of the Office for Inclusion and Community (OIC) broadly, to include the operational and programmatic needs of Proyecto Dirección a Department of Education, grant-funded project (P031S230170) intended to develop a model of Latinx student engagement that will result in a stronger sense of belonging, while building leadership and mentoring skills and connections that will contribute to continued success.

    Reporting to the Director of Diversity Initiatives, this position will serve as an engaged partner in the assessment and reimagining of existing high-impact practices to improve student engagement and persistence. 

    This position requires flexibility to work evening and weekend hours.

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • Support efforts to update (refresh)the following programs as a means to enhance the participant experience, and student persistence: Summer Bridge, First Year Journey, First Year Seminar, Student Together Empowering Peers (STEP); Transfer Student Success.
    • Support efforts to implement new initiatives funded by the Developing Hispanic Serving Institutions (DHSI) Title V grant.
    • Collaborate with community partners to develop and implement initiatives related to the institution’s mission.
    • Stay up to date on current issues, best practice, and national trends related to HSIs, and share that knowledge with others on campus.
    • Collaborate with students, faculty, staff, academic departments, and offices to identify and address issues and opportunities related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI); promotes DEI and Latinx initiatives on campus, including the specific objectives of Proyecto Dirección (programs, training sessions, events), to assist in the ongoing cultivation of a campus culture that acknowledges, welcomes and celebrates diversity.
    • Assist in the implementation of other strategies to recruit and retain Latinx/Hispanic students and students from other traditionally underrepresented groups Assist in programmatic planning to support recruitment events like:  Discover Redlands, Admitted Students Day, and Orientation.
    • Serve as a resource for students, faculty, and staff on issues related to DEI and HSI, and provide support and guidance to those who may experience discrimination or bias.
    • Assist in the collection and analysis of data on HSI initiatives at the University of Redlands, and use those data to inform future programming and strategies.
    • Oversee event planning and management to include: budget projections and oversite,  vendor and contractor coordination, event scheduling and associated logistics, liaise and coordinate with the information technology team, as needed.
    • Direct and mentor program volunteers and/or student employees.
    • Assist with marketing and communications efforts to include web content, programmatic messaging, family and supporter liaison, etc.
    • Performs other related duties and special projects as assigned.

    Qualification Guidelines

    Any combination equivalent to, but not limited to, the following:

    Experience/Training/Education:

    • Bachelor’s degree in a job-related field or equivalent experience.
    • Experience equivalent to three (3) years of progressively responsible technical, analytical, or administrative experience.

    Preferred:

    • Experience or knowledge of working with grant projects, programs or initiatives, HSI programs, or other programs for historically underserved and underrepresented students or communities.
    • Bilingual and/or bicultural fluency (read, write, and communicate orally in Spanish and English with high levels of/ cross-cultural competency.
    • Experience working with underserved student populations.
    • Experience managing student employees or volunteers.
    • Experience working with students.

    Knowledge and Skills:

    • Commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion, and promoting social justice on campus and beyond.
    • Demonstrated sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of students coming to the University of Redlands, including those with physical and/or learning disabilities.
    • Understanding of best practices and strategies for promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion on college campuses, preferably at a Minority Serving or specifically a Hispanic Serving Institution.
    • Excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills, with the ability to work effectively with a wide range of individuals and groups.
    • Communicate effectively and follow instructions, both verbally and in writing.
    • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
    • Ability to collect, analyze, and interpret data related to campus climate and diversity initiatives.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
    • Ability to manage high volume of electronic communication, prepare reports and spreadsheets, and create presentations.
    • Ability to recommend appropriate courses of action within established guidelines.
    • Ability to foster strong, positive relationships and align both internal and external resources to achieve university objectives.
    • Ability to exercise discretion and work with confidentiality.
    • Must be able to competently interact with a culturally and ethnically diverse population of students, faculty, and staff.

    Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

    Working Conditions:

    Standard office and field setting. Duties performed are primarily in an office environment while sitting at a desk or computer workstation or in meetings. At least minimal environmental controls to assure health and comfort. This position requires flexibility to work evening and weekend hours. 

    Physical Demands:

    Incumbents regularly sit for long periods; walk short distances on a regular basis; may travel to attend meetings and conduct work; use hands and fingers to operate an electronic keyboard or other office machines; reach with hands and arms; stoop or kneel or crouch to file; speak clearly and distinctly to answer telephones and to provide information; see to read fine print and operate computer; hear and understand voices over telephone and in person; and lift, carry and/or move objects weighing up to 20 pounds.

    HIRING RANGE: Anticipated hiring range is near or at the minimum of the classification, commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training. The University of Redlands is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is defined as the Full Pay Range. The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position defined as the Hiring Range. Placement within the Hiring Range is determined by internal equity, and relevant qualifications. 

    BACKGROUND CHECK: Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. The University will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information.     DRIVER'S LICENSE CHECK: Possession of a valid Driver's License is required for certain positions.     PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL EXAMS: For certain positions typically in Public Safety, Facilities, Athletics and Information Technology Services departments, employment is contingent upon a candidate passing a pre-employment physical exam with the ability to lift in excess of 50 lbs.  Public Safety Officers, in addition to a pre-employment physical exam, will also be required to pass a psychological evaluation.
