JOB SUMMARY
The Sustainability Manager leads research and analysis to develop corporate strategies to ensure implementation of environmental and sustainability plans, strategies, standards, procedures, and systems designed around zero waste initiatives.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop sustainability goals to help align strategies and support the corporate long-term strategic plan
- Coordinate with multiple departments to improve financial viability and sustainability of recycle and warehousing departments by bringing new ideas and finding new opportunities
- Responsible for negotiating pricing and securing vendors
- Responsible for increasing landfill diversion and revenue in post-retail operations
- Assists with annual budget preparation; coordinates budget for recycling division
- Prepare regular and specialized sustainability program reports and presentations on a monthly basis
- Partner with operations manager and retail management to streamline and maximize salvage opportunities
- Comply with all agency policies, procedures, safety standards and maintain same to meet CARF, Department of Labor, OSHA, DOT, and other regulatory standards.
- Coordinate recycling of commodities such as shoes, books, wire, plastics, electronics, toys, cardboard, etc. for revenue generation
- Coordinate transit in partner with the operations manager for all regional and international buyers, keep up to date records and manage salvage shipments to ensure a constant flow without backlog
- Engage in the community to locate other donated salvage opportunities and negotiate the pick-up of commodity materials
- Serve as the sustainability liaison with internal departments and external partners
- Improve, investigate and expand recycling strategies and develop new systems to collect and recycle waste
- Manage contracts and invoices for recycled material transactions
- Collaborate and form partnerships with community organizations in waste and recycling industry
- Identify and pursue grants to support new waste reduction initiatives and fund infrastructure needs
- Visit all facilities on regular and routine basis.
- Educate and engage team members to drive sustainable business practices across the organization. Collaborate with marketing to communicate the environmental impact of Goodwill’s sustainability efforts to community stakeholders
- Proposes and implements strategies to address various environmental concerns including energy use, conservation, reduction of pollution, recycling, building and facility design, and general education on sustainability
- Provides leadership, guidance and professional development to staff
- Investigate all accidents/injuries and document according to established policy
- Meet or exceed the attendance and flexibility expectations for this position

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
- Five (5) years’ experience in sustainability, environmental sciences, or recycling OR a Bachelor’s degree in business, sustainability, environmental science or environmental studies required
- Five (5) or more years of supervisory experience preferred
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
- First Aid/CPR Certification
- Forklift Certification
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Must have knowledge of CDL and DOT requirements
- Must demonstrate self-initiative, manage multiple tasks, prioritize projects, and meet deadlines
- Must have working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Excel and Word software and computer hardware
- Must be able to hold staff accountable for results
- Must be able to make sound decisions
