Translator translates written and spoken information from one language to another. Reads, comprehends, and rewrites materials in designated languages following established linguistic rules related to word meanings, sentence structure, grammar, and punctuation. Being a Translator must be well versed in vocabulary dealing with specialty. Must follow ethical procedures and policies that protect the confidentiality of information. Additionally, Translator may require a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. The Translator gains exposure to some of the complex tasks within the job function. Occasionally directed in several aspects of the work.     Primary Purpose:

    Reynolds School District is seeking bilingual (various languages) individuals to serve as on-call interpreters and or translators in any language other than English. This position supports the families of students as well as school personnel by providing interpretation or translation, as needed.

     

    Essential Job Functions:

     

    Responsible for listening to, understanding, and interpreting/translating spoken or written statements from one language to another. Reproduce statements in another language for listening or reading audience.

     

    Interpreters:

    • Facilitate effective communication between two parties that do not speak a similar language by converting one spoken language to another.
    • Attending conferences and meetings and acting as interpreter to facilitate communication.
    • Follow the Interpreter training protocols and District Code of Ethics
    • Attend district training to ensure performance according to district expectations.
    • Ensure presence at meetings at different locations and times.
    • Translators:
    • Accurately relay concepts and ideas between languages
    • Create a new text in the target language that reproduces the content and style of the original
    • Edit and proofread text to accurately reflect language.
    • Receive and submit assignments electronically.
    • Use dictionaries and glossaries for reference.
    • Interpret/Translate both educational terminology and colloquial language.
    • Read aloud documents in a language other than in which they were written.

     

    Minimum Qualifications:

     

    Experience Required: 

     

    • Prior job-related experience and/or any combination of education and experience which would provide the applicant with the desired knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job including working as a bilingual aide or teacher, working directly with the community (i.e., community resource aide), or coordinating family education programs and training parents.
    • Fluent and literate in target language, as well as English language, to provide translation and or interpreting services.
    • Familiar with the US education system as well as education in the native culture.
    • Able to communicate effectively and respectfully with students, parents, and the school community, using strong cross cultural and interpersonal skills.
    • Professional, courteous behavior expected. Basic knowledge of computers preferred, but not required.
    • Experience as a professional interpreter preferred but is not required. Training is provided.

     

     

    Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities Preferred:

    • Skills to:
      • Perform written translation and/or oral interpretation in the target language.
      • Recognize and perform the three types of interpretation: consecutive, simultaneous and sight translation.
      • Use standard English in verbal or written form.
      • Use correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
      • Perform basic clerical functions.
      • Perform basic arithmetic calculations.
      • Operate standard office equipment including computer, telephone, printer, copier, and presentation equipment.
      • Effectively use Microsoft Office computer applications including Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel.
      • Communicate effectively and with proficiency both orally in person and by phone and in writing in both English and the target language.
    • Knowledge of:
      • English and Target Language (oral and/or written).

     

    Licensing/Special Requirements:

    • Valid Driver's License & evidence of insurability, Oregon Fingerprint & Criminal Background Check clearance.

     

    Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

    • Must have the ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
    • For translators, exhibit manual dexterity to see and read a computers screen and printed materials.
    • For interpreters, must hear and understand speech at normal levels and speak in audible tones so others may understand clearly.
