Reads, comprehends, and rewrites materials in designated languages following established linguistic rules related to word meanings, sentence structure, grammar, and punctuation. Being a Translator must be well versed in vocabulary dealing with specialty. Must follow ethical procedures and policies that protect the confidentiality of information. Additionally, Translator may require a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. The Translator gains exposure to some of the complex tasks within the job function. Occasionally directed in several aspects of the work.       PURPOSE:
      The purpose of this position is to improve student achievement by performing translations for District schools, departments and programs and other translation services.


      Hours: 15 hrs/week
      Rate: $25.81
      FLSA Status: Non-exempt (Classified)
      Contract Status: Regular/Probationary

      ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

      • Translates district-wide documents, including IEPs and curriculum.
      • Formats final product of documents, in Spanish, of various program applications including Excel, Microsoft Word and PDF’s and Google Docs.
      • Translates verbal and written communication from English to Spanish and Spanish to English for students and families.
      • Interprets oral communication as needed by phone or in person.
      • Proofreads and edits other translations.
      • Assists the Equity Coordinator with training for translators, as needed.
      • Collaborates with Equity and Communication coordinator to update Dual Language Immersion and Spanish language information on the district website.
      • Provides other related services as assigned.

      • Carry out work responsibilities with strong organizational skills effectively under pressure of deadlines, difficult situations, interruptions, and new or emergency conditions.
      • Respect confidential information and the privacy of students, staff, and parents.
      • Develop job skills necessary to meet changes in the position.
      • Maintain personal appearance and hygiene appropriate to the position as defined by the district.
      • Meet applicable district physical ability/health and safety guidelines for the position.

      QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.       • Knowledge of structure and content of standard English and Spanish including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition and grammar, and pronunciation
      • Ability to translate both written and verbal communication from English to Spanish and Spanish to English
      • High level of bilingual and biliteracy skills in Spanish preferred
      • An associate’s (or higher) degree, two years post secondary study (72 quarter or 48 semester credits), or a passing score on a district approved assessment.
      • Minimum two years of technical translation and interpretation experience
      • Ability to exhibit professionalism, leadership, and effective human relations.
      • Ability to interact effectively and collaboratively with individuals and groups of all ages.
      • Ability to facilitate meetings and collaboration efforts with staff and community.
      • Ability to communicate technical, complex and/or sensitive information to students and/or families
      • Ability to collect, record, store, retrieve, assimilate, organize, and utilize information and records electronically and by using traditional methods.
      • Knowledge of state and federal laws and state ORSs and OARs governing education, student and staff rights and local board policies and administrative rules.
      • Ability to travel among district facilities as needed, and if driving, the ability to meet district driving standards.
      • Standard First Aid certification, or the ability to obtain certification within two months of hire, may be required.

      While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, and stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee is required to regularly walk (occasionally on an uneven surface), occasionally sit and reach with hands and arms (frequently reaching above the shoulder).

      Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

      The employee may drive approximately .5 to 1.0 hour per day. The employee must regularly lift, move, and/or carry up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 40 pounds with assistance, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 60 pounds with assistance.
