The Position

The Ocular Coordinator is responsible for the completion of daily eye bank activities to include the evaluation, processing, and distribution of eye tissue ensuring optimal outcomes for corneal surgeons, recipients, and donor families. This position is also responsible for ensuring compliance with internal policies and procedures, as well as participating in quality and performance excellence initiatives to maximize availability of corneal tissue.

What You’ll Do

Evaluate Tissue Suitability

• Review serological testing and donor patient medical and social history to determine suitability for transplantation.
• Conduct physical assessment of tissue to determine and interpret the quality and health of tissue using slit lamp, specular microscopy and Ocular Coherence Tomography (OCT).
• Determine and document final suitability of tissue for release for transplant meeting all quality and regulatory requirements

Process Tissue for transplantation

• Execute manual tissue graft dissection for Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK) including for pre-loaded DMEK.
• Perform partial thickness cornea dissection utilizing a microsurgical dissection technique for Descemet Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty (DSEAK).
• Evaluate and compile pre- and post- dissection assessment documentation and communicate results to transplant surgeons.
• Utilize surgical techniques to prepare sclera allografts for transplantation.

Administrative and Distribution

• Review, prepare and interpret donor medical and social history to ensure that all known donor records are compliant with FDA and Eye Bank Association of America (EBAA) tissue transplantation regulations.
• Collaborate with Medical Records department to ensure a timely release of tissue to transplant surgeons.
• Establish and promote relationships with cornea surgeons and their staff to maximize customer service processes.
• Assist with the distribution of ocular tissue to ensure maximization of tissue placement.
• Perform accurate documentation of the disposition of tissue in donor’s electronic health record (EMR).
• Label and package tissue in accordance with FDA and EBAA regulations.

Sunday – Thursday 7:00am-3:00pm
