Transportation Director directs, develops, and implements overall operations of a transportation network including safety, compliance, equipment, and staff. Develops and directs operational policies and procedures to ensure safety and efficiency in all transportation activities. Being a Transportation Director monitors transportation costs, service level agreements, and performance metrics to identify and resolve problems and achieve efficiencies. Partners with internal and external stakeholders to forecast and meet capacity needs. Additionally, Transportation Director oversees the acquisition and oversight of transportation providers. Requires a bachelor's degree in logistics, transportation, supply chain management, or equivalent. Typically reports to top management. The Transportation Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be a Transportation Director typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.     ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Provides leadership and direction for a staff of professional and subprofessional employees engaged in planning, engineering, construction, maintenance, permitting and finance
    • Provide administrative oversight and direction to include: strategic planning, policy development, resource allocation, conducting performance evaluations, ensuring staff are trained, ensuring that employees follow policies and procedures, maintaining a healthy and safe working environment, and making hiring, termination, and disciplinary recommendations
    • Directs the development of the annual budget and makes funding and resource recommendations
    • Delegates authority to subordinate managers in specialized area and assures that work is completed thoroughly and efficiently
    • Serves as County representative on transportation related matters and policies to local, regional, State, and Federal agencies and partners
    • Directs studies, analyses, and evaluations for the appropriate County Board parent committee
    • Recommends hires and promotions, directs and evaluates employment decisions for all assigned positions


    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

    Exercises supervision of personnel in related area of responsibility.


    EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

    Completion of a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Urban Planning, Business Administration, Public Administration or related field and Ten (10) years of progressively more responsible experience in transportation, five (5) of which should have been in a managerial or administrative capacity with staffing and budgeting responsibilities; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.


    The preferred candidate will possess a valid Illinois Professional Engineer license.


    A pre-employment background check is required.
