Transportation Manager manages and coordinates the daily operations of a transportation network including safety, compliance, equipment, and staff. Implements operational policies and procedures to ensure safety and efficiency in all transportation activities. Being a Transportation Manager monitors transportation costs, service level agreements, and performance metrics to identify and resolve problems and achieve efficiencies. Partners with internal and external stakeholders to meet forecasted capacity needs. Additionally, Transportation Manager manages relations with transportation providers to ensure the achievement of required service levels. Requires a bachelor's degree in logistics, transportation, supply chain management, or equivalent. Typically reports to a director. The Transportation Manager manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Transportation Manager typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required.   • Summary/Objective
    The Transportation Manager is responsible for overseeing a wide variety of transportation activities. Plan, direct, and coordinate the transportation operations within an organization or the activities of organizations that provide transportation services. Hires, trains, and supervises employees and manages scheduling of shipments. Ensures that shipments into or out of our organization are handled quickly, safely, and within budget constraints. This includes oversight of transportation equipment and personnel operated by our organization. Will also coordinate with outside companies that provides freight services. Familiarity with shipment options, legal issues, government regulations, and safety procedures is required, as is knowledge of geography, mathematics, and computer applications.

    Essential Functions

    1. Direct activities related to dispatching, routing, and tracking transportation vehicles.

    2. Plan, organize and manage the work of subordinate staff to ensure that the work is accomplished in a manner consistent with organizational requirements.

    3. Oversee operations including setting route sequences for delivery, documentation, storage, safety and distribution of equipment and supplies and maintenance of inventory.

    a. Conduct and monitor inventory load condition.

    b. Minimize the amount of damaged goods.

    c. Communicate issues or special directions from warehouse to transportation staff.

    d. Follow all Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP), Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), and Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures (SSOP).

    e. Monitor and control Time and Temperature for storing, picking or transporting goods.

    4. Ensure accuracy of the merchandise during delivery.

    5. Must educate and train staff on Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) plan to ensure Transportation policies and procedures follow the stated Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)


    6. Direct investigations to verify and resolve customer or delivery complaints.

    7. Establish quality transportation services.

    8. Implement schedule and policy changes.

    9. Collaborate with other managers and staff members in order to formulate and implement policies, procedures, goals, and objectives.

    10. Implement, review, and monitor all Driver-Vehicle Inspection Logs (DVIR) to ensure timely repairs and maintenance.

    11. Monitor operations to ensure that staff members comply with administrative policies and procedures, safety rules, , and state/federal regulations.

    12. Promote safe work activities by conducting safety audits, attending company safety meetings, and meeting with individual staff members.

    13. Develop criteria, application instructions, procedural manuals, and contracts for federal and state public transportation programs.

    14. Direct and coordinate, through subordinates, activities of operations department in order to obtain use of equipment, facilities, and human resources.

    15. Direct activities of drivers on the timeliness of reporting issues for service, repairs, and maintenance to equipment or vehicles.

    16. Conduct investigations in cooperation with Safety/Human Resources to determine causes of transportation accidents and to improve safety procedures.

    17. Analyze expenditures and other financial information in order to develop plans, policies, and budgets for increasing profits and improving services.

    18. Negotiate and authorize contracts with equipment and materials suppliers, and monitor contract fulfillment.

    19. Set operations policies and standards in partnership with Safety, including determination of safety procedures for the handling of dangerous goods.

    20. Recommend capital expenditures for acquisition of new equipment or property in order to increase efficiency and services of operations department.

    21. Prepare management recommendations, such as proposed fee and tariff increases or schedule changes.

    22. Conduct employee training sessions on subjects such as hazardous material handling, employee orientation, quality improvement and computer use.

    23. Provide administrative and technical assistance to those receiving transportation training.

    24. Assist in the identification and implementation of continuous improvement opportunities and customer satisfaction opportunities.

    25. Provide a process for communication to flow from the drivers to the administration and from the administration to drivers.

    26. Maintain a safe and secure working environment

    27. Organize workflow to meet deadlines.

    28. Ability to work safely and follow all safety policies and procedures.

    29. Wear all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to ensure a safe work environment.

    30. Clean and respond to any spills immediately.

    31. Sweep and clean to maintain required level of cleanliness.

    32. Incorporate Food Safety compliance measures for all transportation deliveries.

    33. Perform other duties as assigned.

    Supervisory Responsibility
    This position serves as a direct manager to day Transportation Supervisor, CDL A, CDL B and Transportation Delivery Type 3.

    Work Environment
    This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. At times this position is required to drive, deliver, and load/unload trucks.

    Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
    This is a Regular Full-Time, Exempt (Salary) position and schedule hours of work and days will be Monday through Friday, 2:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday, 2:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. transportation operational hours. Schedule may change.

    Qualifications

    To perform this job successfully, the individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility in a safe and satisfactory manner. Oversee department by applying logic and reasoning to solve complex problems, use sound judgement and discretion in performing work duties. Requires excellent written and oral communications skills. Ability to listen, persuade, and influence skills in dealing with all levels of employees, clients and vendors.

    The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; requires activities involving being around moving machinery, exposure to marked changes in temperature and humidity, and exposure to dust, fumes, and gases. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs on a regular basis and up to 75 lbs on occasion.

    Required Education and Experience

    • High School Diploma or equivalent.
    • Five (5) years in transportation or logistics management.

    Preferred Education and Experience

    • Knowledge of transportation process.
    • Thorough knowledge of DOT regulations, tractors, trailers, reefers, and truck computer systems.
    • Desire to learn and grow.
    • Must have attention to detail, excellent customer service and front of the line support.
    • Ability to balance and prioritize multiple tasks.
