    What you will be doing:
    This is an essential position with the Alaska Cancer Registry (ACR). You are responsible for collecting and managing clinical cancer data submitted by healthcare facilities such as hospitals, physician offices, pathology laboratories, and other state cancer registries. As a Cancer Registrar, you will participate in quality control activities using guidelines established by the National Program of Cancer Registries (NPCR). You will serve as a resource for facilities that report cancer data and participate in ongoing cancer surveillance activities.

    Our organization, mission, and culture: 
    The mission of the Division of Public Health is to protect and promote the health of Alaskans. The Alaska Health Analytics and Vital Records Section (HAVRS) is chiefly responsible for administrating three major public health data systems, including the Alaska Cancer Registry (ACR). The Alaska Cancer Registry is a statewide central cancer registry that conducts cancer surveillance activities under the CDC’s National Program of Cancer Registries (NPCR) using cancer data submitted by healthcare facilities.  The ACR collects cancer data to determine cancer incidence, mortality, treatment, and survival as a part of the Division’s mission.  In this role, you have the opportunity and responsibility to execute significant components of the state’s central registry.

    The working environment you can expect:
    The job location for this position is in the Frontier Building in midtown, Anchorage, Alaska. It is a relatively quiet office environment in a suite with the other Alaska Cancer Registry and administrative staff. There are restaurants, cafes, and grocery stores in the surrounding area. Parking is free, and the building includes a break room and conference space and is in the same building as other state offices.

    The following combinations of work experience and education may be substituted for the requisite bachelor's degree:

    Two additional years of experience providing any combination of administrative, information systems, medical coding, and/or programmatic support services to healthcare or similar public health providers, specialists, and/or related programs. This experience includes, but is not limited to, work such as a Medical Information and Services Assistant, Medical Information and Services Supervisor, Medical Services Coding Technician, Medical Transcriptionist, Medical Records Administrator, Health Program Associate, Licensed Practical Nurse, Nurse, or Public Health Nurse with the State of Alaska or its equivalent with another employer;
    AND EITHER
    An associate's degree, or the equivalent, from an accredited college;
    AND
    Successful completion of an NCRA-Accredited Certificate Program, such as Cancer Registry Management (CRM) or Cancer Information Management (CIM).
    OR
    An associate's degree, or the equivalent, from an accredited college, which includes or is supplemented by at least 6 semester (8 quarter) hours of study in the fields of human anatomy and physiology.

    Experience as a College Intern 4, Paralegal 2, or Administrative Assistant 2 may be qualifying if the work is specifically related to the collection and maintenance of data concerning disease or conditions of public health importance such as cancer, infectious diseases, injury, traumatic brain injury, etc.

    ***This is a trainee class only, and continued employment is contingent upon successfully completing an established training plan and CTR accreditation within two years of initial employment. ***

    Cancer Registrar 2

    A bachelor's degree, or the equivalent, from an accredited college in any field, which includes or is supplemented by at least 6 semester (8 quarter) hours of study in the fields of human anatomy and physiology;
    AND
    Accreditation as a Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) by the National Cancer Registrars Association (NCRA).

    Substitution:
    The following combinations of work experience and education may be substituted for the requisite bachelor's degree:

    Two years of experience providing any combination of administrative, information systems, medical coding, and/or programmatic support services to healthcare or similar public health providers, specialists, and/or related programs. This experience includes, but is not limited to, work such as a Medical Information and Services Assistant, Medical Information and Services Supervisor, Medical Services Coding Technician, Medical Transcriptionist, Medical Records Administrator, Health Program Associate, Licensed Practical Nurse, Nurse, or Public Health Nurse with the State of Alaska or its equivalent with another employer;
