Tumor Registrar identifies, registers, and maintains records of all cancer patients using tumor registry systems and software. Prepares abstracts and performs coding of clinical patient data related to cancer. Being a Tumor Registrar performs data analysis and provides reports used by researchers, physicians, institutions, and patients. Adheres to all coding and privacy policies, guidelines, and regulations. Additionally, Tumor Registrar may require an associate degree or equivalent. Requires Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) credential. May require Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) certification. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Tumor Registrar works independently within established procedures associated with the specific job function. Has gained proficiency in multiple competencies relevant to the job. Oncology Data Specialist (Certificated Tumor Registar)

    An oncology date specialist (ODS) (formerly known as a certified tumor registrar) is a someone who analyzes, abstracts and codes demographics, patient and cancer related information, treatment and staging from the review of medical records on all cancer cases seen in Central North Dakota and enters information into a database. Ensures correct staging, coding and subsequent patient care and survival reports are completed. Coordinates multidisciplinary cancer case conferences. This behind the scenes work assists physicians to provide quality of care and management of their patients’ disease. The ODS will maintain ongoing training and education for accrediting agencies.

    Education: Minimum of an Associate Degree in Health Sciences or Allied Health including at least two semesters of anatomy and physiology required. Acquisition of Oncology Data Specialist credential within three years from hire date required.

    Experience: Two years in a healthcare setting preferred. Certification is preferred but will train. Certification required within 3 years of hire date. Excellent computer/typing skills and ability to work independently while maintaining patient confidentiality required.
