Decides on appropriate premium rates and issues coverage. Being an Underwriter (P/C) provides customer services regarding underwriting processes and decisions. May communicate with field agents to gather additional information or to explain underwriting decisions. Additionally, Underwriter (P/C) typically requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Underwriter (P/C) work is closely managed. Works on projects/matters of limited complexity in a support role. Under the supervision of the Underwriting Team, supports the team in deciding whether to accept applications for insurance cover. Determining risk is a complex process and this position relies on sensible judgement and meticulous attention to detail. The Associate Underwriter must ensure that accurate quotes are produced which are both competitive for the customer but also profitable for the company. Primary focus on Property and Casualty for Personal and Commercial Lines. SSIU empowers our underwriters to put their exceptional analytical skills to use every day to assess and measure risk. Responsibilities & Duties
• Evaluate risks, quote with underwriter supervision, and refer analysis for underwriter approval
• Determine the acceptability of the risk and appropriate premium for coverage offered in accordance with the established underwriting guidelines; ensures compliance with underwriting strategies and regulatory compliance
• Demonstrates a professional and courteous attitude with agents, which includes responding promptly and ethically to all requests and issues. Delivers on promises and only promises what can be delivered.
• Provides accurate and thorough education to agents about the company’s risk selection philosophy and pricing guidelines.
• Makes field visits to agent’s offices to build relationships and solicit new business applications
• Contribute to operational efficiencies.
REQUIREMENTS
Education & Experience
• Bachelor’s degree with a Business or Risk Management emphasis preferred
• High school Diploma or Equivalent
• Some exposure to underwriting concepts and a gal of further development of insurance knowledge and experience
• Working knowledge of Windows PC, Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel is required

• Superior analytical, math, statistical and negotiation skills
• Ability to work independently and with a team
• Should be flexible and able to switch quickly from one project to another when dictated by business need
• A willingness to put forth additional effort when critical projects arise as well as availability to communicate with people in different time zones are important. A positive, “can-do” attitude is expected
• Maintains confidentiality
• Listens actively and conveys appropriate information to others
• Strong attention to detail, data analysis, and excellent decision-making skills are desired
• Excellent customer service, interpersonal, and communication skills are preferred
