JOB SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the Cancer Program Manager, the Oncology Data Specialist- Certified (ODS-C) is responsible for the collection, management, and analysis of data on persons with the diagnosis of a malignant or neoplastic (cancer). Oncology Data Specialists analyze complex patient cancer data, abstract, code and report cancer statistics. The Oncology Data Specialist must ensure accuracy, consistency, completeness, and quality of the cancer data that is abstracted for use in cancer control, survival, epidemiological research, public health program planning and patient care improvement. The ODS-C uses recognized cancer disease coding classifications (ICD-0, etc.) staging conventions and methodologies, they must identify, code, stage, and collect treatment and survival information for each patient.
The ODS-C must use SEER ICD-10 case-finding codes and standard setter techniques to identify cases. They must understand the morphology of the disease, staging criteria, treatment modalities, and evidence based NCCN guidelines to accurately abstract each patient record.
The ODS participate in quality performance improvement activities as needed regarding coding accuracy, completeness, data quality and integrity; identify issues in correct sequencing of codes.
