    • Responsible for the operation and full understanding of the water systems functions including control, monitoring and data storage.
    • Determine treatment and operational changes needed to remain within regulatory limits of purity, water chemical requirements, and water production needs.
    • Analyze present and anticipated raw water quality, evaluates test results, and changes chemical feed rates, filtration rates, and other parameters to keep operations within established limits.
    • Operate, maintain, repair, modify, and replace potable water treatment system components for public water systems.
    • Is the operator-in-charge of water systems as required by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and State health agency regulations and guidelines promulgated in accordance with Safe Drinking Water Act and amendments thereto.
    • Responsible for the operation and maintenance of seven swimming pools ranging in size from 5000 to 1,250,000 gallons.
    • Troubleshoot, disassembles and repairs self-contained vehicle wash facility equipment.

    • Incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain the State of Hawaii Grade I Water Treatment Plant Operator Certification within one year of employment.
    • Incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain the Certified Pool/Spa (CPO) certification within one year of employment.
    • Must obtain/maintain a government vehicle operator's license for the class of vehicles operated. Must obtain/maintain a state driver's license.
    • Must respond to emergency calls after regular working hours.
    • May be subject to rotating shifts.
    • Incumbent must pass a pre-employment physical and any subsequent annual physical.
    • Mission Essential: Incumbent is required to report for duty during inclement weather, Natural Disasters, and other emergency situations and may be required to remain on duty after the official shift ends.
    • This position requires temporary duty travel (TDY) of 10%.

    Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Water Treatment Plant Operator ~ without more than normal supervision. Monitoring pumping equipment and gauges according to a prescribed schedule and perform routine operator maintenance; regulate water volume and perform simple treatment processes such as aerating and softening water; monitor tank levels and pump water into storage tanks or distribution systems; conduct and record basic water sampling tests such as chlorine, fluoride, calcium hardness and pH and make appropriate chemical and mechanical adjustments to maintain the proper chemical ranges; perform swimming pool operations including backwashing filters, testing water chemistry (Chlorine, pH, Total Alkalinity, Calcium Hardness, Cyanuric Acid, TDS); perform routine operator maintenance such as lubricating, cleaning, changing filters, and painting water pumping equipment and pipes, and assist higher grade operators in performing minor operational repairs. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
    • PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work requires considerable walking, standing on concrete floors, and climbing stairways and ladders. Light-to-moderate effort is used to turn off valves and controls. Heavy physical effort is regularly required in loading and unloading of materials, chemicals and tools, lifting pipe and items of plumbing systems to be installed may exceed 50lbs. Is sometimes required to work in cramped positions. May be required to walk into or out of the Deep well tunnel in the event the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) is inoperable. Light physical effort is required in driving to and from work sites.???????
    • WORKING CONDITIONS: Works inside and outside in all kinds of weather. Work requires regular ingress and egress to the Deep well tunnel, (A Non-permit required confined space as long as the atmospheric conditions do not change. In the event the atmospheric conditions change the Deep well tunnel is reclassified as a permit-required confined space. Incumbent is exposed to a variety of infectious diseases while operating, maintaining, and repairing equipment. Work also involves potential exposure to poisonous/corrosive chemicals and compounds, a variety of hazardous, toxic or flammable gases, liquids, and fumes, including chlorine gas, calcium hypochlorite, carbon dioxide, and dusts containing lead, asbestos. Incumbent sometimes must work in OSHA-classified confined spaces which requires specialized respiratory protection and safety equipment. Protective devices such as self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), respirators; full-face respirators, chemical gloves/aprons, safety shoes, safety glasses/goggles, hard hats, hearing protection, harnesses must be worn. Incumbent is exposed to the danger of falling into open tanks and manholes which may result in cuts, bruises, and broken bones. Incumbent is subject to cuts, bruises, and broken bones as a result of accidents when loading or unloading vehicles.
