Waste Water Treatment Technician ensures that pumps, conveyors, blowers, chlorinators, vacuum equipment and other waste water treatment equipment are functioning properly. Monitors equipment for potential failures and may make minor repairs or adjustments as needed. Being a Waste Water Treatment Technician collects water samples for chemical analysis. May be required to complete an apprenticeship and/or formal training in area of specialty. Additionally, Waste Water Treatment Technician typically requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Waste Water Treatment Technician works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area. The purpose of this classification is to perform technical tasks to maintain and repair meters and regulators for the City. Acts as the coordinator of the related materials, parts, supplies and equipment inventory. Positions in the Gas Department are subject to 24-hour call.
Services, repairs, installs, removes, and/or replaces meters and associated equipment, and performs related manual work, which may include locating and uncovering covered meters, raising meter boxes to ground level, cleaning out meter boxes, pumping water from meter boxes, replacing/repairing water meters, replacing cutoffs under pressure from main line, locating/repairing utility leaks, replacing meter boxes and lids, replacing meter couplings and washers, rebuilding small residential meters and large commercial meters, digging dirt/debris from meter boxes, or shoveling materials.
Maintains, repairs and tests meters and regulators; disassembles, cleans and paints meters and regulators; changes meter charts and performs flow tests; tests meters and regulators at high and low pressures to ensure adequate performance; repairs or replaces worn and defective parts; refinishes dial faces and number wheels; reassembles equipment for use; salvages usable parts of worn out meters and regulators; and maintains parts in inventory for future use.
Picks up malfunctioning and broken meters and regulators in the field; installs new and repaired meters.
Provides customer service in the field by responds to service calls, customer inquiries, and complaints; investigates operating condition of meters; calibrates meters; diagnoses and resolves problems; talks with customers at sites or leaves notices at door as appropriate to discuss problems, explain the tests performed, and provide information about potential repair options.
Provides assistance in locating utility leaks.
High school diploma or GED; supplemented by two (2) years of experience in basic mechanical maintenance and repair of meters and related equipment with some experience in purchasing and inventory management; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess a valid driver’s license. Will be required to obtain a valid State of Louisiana driver’s license at time of appointment and maintain throughout employment for this classification. Must possess and maintain any state or federal certifications required in the field of assignment.
