Welder joins, fabricates, and repairs metal and other weldable material by applying appropriate welding techniques. Interprets blueprints, specifications, diagrams or schematics to determine appropriate welding process. Being a Welder inspects completed welds to determine structural soundness. Familiar with and complies with all safety requirements and protocols for working in a hazardous environment. Additionally, Welder may prepare the materials and set up for a welding device or robot. May be required to complete an apprenticeship and/or formal training in area of specialty. Typically requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Welder works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area. Possesses a moderate understanding of general aspects of the job. The primary role of the Welder II is to provide support towards the operations and maintenance of the DSNGRR locomotives and mechanical department inventory. This position will be primarily based out of the Durango yard however, it may include periods of work at other locations on the railroad.
The ideal candidate will be a self-motivated individual with the ability to work both individually and in a team environment. Candidates should have a full understanding and proven ability to work with MIG, TIG and ARC welding processes. A high degree of value will be placed on a candidate’s fabrication abilities and ability to weld stainless steel. Applicants for the Welder II position are expected to be able to perform welds on locomotive boilers and possess appropriate 6G certifications (or have the skill to obtain them within six months of hire). Applicants will be requested to demonstrate their welding skills during the interview process. Preference will be given to candidates who have prior steam locomotive or historic boiler welding experience and/or possess any additional trade skills or mechanical abilities.
