Welder joins, fabricates, and repairs metal and other weldable material by applying appropriate welding techniques. Interprets blueprints, specifications, diagrams or schematics to determine appropriate welding process. Being a Welder inspects completed welds to determine structural soundness. Familiar with and complies with all safety requirements and protocols for working in a hazardous environment. Additionally, Welder may prepare the materials and set up for a welding device or robot. May be required to complete an apprenticeship and/or formal training in area of specialty. Typically requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Welder works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area. Possesses a moderate understanding of general aspects of the job. The Welder performs layout, fabrication, installation, testing, and repair of shipyard or vessel welding projects. The Fitter works with presses, shaping and forming plates to fit vessel decks, bulkheads and side shells. Candidates will perform essential duties and responsibilities personally or through coordination with production and safety departments in our Brooklyn, New York location.
The ideal candidate will operate accessory equipment and perform tasks necessary for welding metal, such as fusing metal segments, using gas tungsten arc, metal arc, flux-cored arc, plasma arc, and other types of welding arcs. Applicants must be proficient in welding Aluminum, Stainless Steel and Carbon Steel. Experience with Non-Destructive Examination is a plus. Candidates should have experience with reading and interpreting blueprints, engineering drawings and technical specifications.
Good interpersonal skills are required. Strong oral and written communication skills; a minimum of three to five years of related experience and/or training within a marine setting; or the combination of education and experience that enables performance of all aspects of the position. Possession of AWS and/or NDT certifications a plus. Use of personal protective equipment such as respirators, hard hats and safety footwear is required while on work sites. Work will involve visiting work sites both indoors and outdoors at all times of the year.
