What does an Director, Corporate Development and Strategic Partnerships do at companies like 2U, Inc.?

What We’re Looking For:

The Corporate Development & Strategic Partnerships team at 2U is a small but highly active and impactful team focused on supporting 2U’s broader strategic goals. This includes leading all activity related to M&A and strategic partnerships, as well as corporate level competitive and market analysis, and other strategic projects that fall outside 2U’s existing business operations.

We’re looking for a Director to join the team to support and lead this work alongside the Head of Corporate Development, to whom this role reports. The role has significant exposure to 2U’s senior leaders and requires the ability to navigate complex and sometimes unstructured environments with many moving pieces. Successful individuals in the role will be analytical and have high attention to detail, while also being able to maintain focus on the larger picture and be able to apply commercial judgement to key business decisions.

Responsibilities Include, But Are Not Limited To:

  • Work alongside the Head of Corporate Development to develop, originate and execute 2U’s M&A and partnership strategy, including:
    • Fostering new relationships across the EdTech landscape
    • Proactively identifying and sourcing new opportunities, aligned to 2U’s strategy
    • Assessing strategic rationale and appropriateness of buy/build/partner strategies
    • Building and maintaining business and valuation models
    • Managing due diligence processes, including coordination with internal functional leads and external advisors
    • Working in close partnership with colleagues across 2U
    • Liaising with 2U’s Chief Legal Officer and Deputy General Counsel on legal documents
  • Support key strategic projects for COO and CEO, such as market benchmarking, competitive analysis and board strategy reports
  • Working with executives across 2U to drive product innovation, develop new capabilities and improve 2U’s organizational efficiency

Things That Should Be In Your Background:

  • 8+ years work experience, including 3+ year at top tier investment bank, consulting firm or in-house corporate development/M&A environment, or strong strategy & finance background
  • Excellent communication skills – verbal and written. Ability and confidence to establish credibility and work with senior management
  • Commercially minded with strong analytical ability and modeling skills
  • Self-starter with experience in fast paced environment
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and senior internal stakeholders
  • Experience in managing open deal issues through to resolution in a prioritized and commercially focused manner

Other Attributes That Will Help You In This Role:

  • Experience in EdTech, Education Services or Technology
  • Desire to work in fast pace, growth focused, mission driven organization.
  • MBA, but not required depending on background
  • Ability to work with a diverse team in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated self-initiative
