What does an Technical Project Manager do at companies like 2U, Inc.?

What We're Looking for:

The Technical Project Manager (TPM) will be responsible for managing and coordinating cross-team projects championed by 2U’s Data Science org. The ideal candidate will be able to draw on previous professional experience as a Project Manager, and has a demonstrated mastery of Project Management techniques including those that work within an agile context. To be successful, the individual will need to be able to define technical system requirements, identify and manage dependencies and work collaboratively across teams. The ability to effectively manage multiple projects of varying complexity, methodically track each milestone and deliverable, and send out effective communications to external stakeholders is key to success. 

While this individual does not need to have deep expertise in Data Science, it is expected that they will possess sufficient technical literacy and familiarity with the subject matter to effectively project manage this portfolio of work. 

This position will be based in 2U’s Brooklyn, NY office, and will report into 2U’s Data Science organization - a team dedicated to providing data infrastructure and decision support tools that allow 2U teams and university partners to improve student outcomes.

Responsibilities Include But Are Not Limited To:

  • The focal point for technical requirements (intersystem contracts, API definitions, message formats, etc...) within the Data Science team
  • Managing technical projects from start to finish, including planning the work with teams, tracking progress, risk assessment & mitigation and technical dependency management
  • Ensuring that internal team members and tech stakeholders are appraised of status, risks, and projections.
  • Tracking resource utilization; anticipating new needs or capacity shortfalls.

Things That Should Be in Your Background: 

  • Working knowledge of Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) & Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC)
  • Demonstrated success leading complex efforts
  • Experience and deep technical knowledge of software development projects, preferably with Data platforms and applications
  • An understanding of the standard conventions of project management, including work breakdown, estimation dependency identification, etc.
  • Familiarity with agile methodology
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, exhibiting professionalism in both internal and external documentation
  • Experience managing multiple projects and relationships, including working with aggressive deadlines
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • 6 or more years experience as a Project Manager in a technology environment.

  • Certification as a Project Manager, Scrum Master, or related role.
